17:28 EDTNDZNordion updates 2014 outlook
Based on the expected strength of Nordion’s second quarter of fiscal 2014 performance to-date, and Nordion’s latest expectations, the Company has updated its previously stated fiscal 2014 outlook to reflect the impact of certain events subsequent to the release of Nordion’s previous outlook provided in March 2014. This update is preliminary, particularly since the second quarter of fiscal 2014 is not yet complete, and actual results may vary. In Sterilization Technologies, there have been increased requests for shipments of incremental Cobalt-60 during Nordion’s second fiscal quarter from existing customers to sites that Nordion does not typically supply, and from certain new customers. The Company has also become aware that another Co-60 supplier is currently indicating that it is discontinuing supply of Co-60. The Company believes this Co-60 supply will re-enter the market; however, at this time, Nordion cannot determine or estimate, when and to what extent, the supply of such Co-60 will resume and believes that this current increase in requests for shipments from Nordion is likely not permanent. With the increased requests in the second fiscal quarter and the change in supply dynamics, Nordion currently expects Sterilization Technologies revenues in fiscal 2014 to increase by approximately 35%-40%, compared with fiscal 2013, up from the Company’s previous outlook of an annual increase of 10%-15%. In Medical Isotopes, due to continued incremental demand for Reactor isotopes, primarily resulting from the supply disruptions that occurred in the first fiscal quarter of 2014, and higher than expected revenue for Cyclotron isotopes primarily due to Strontium-82 demand, Nordion currently expects Medical Isotopes revenues to be approximately 45% higher in fiscal 2014 compared with fiscal 2013, which is higher than the Company’s previous outlook of an annual increase of approximately 40%. The increase in Nordion’s fiscal 2014 Reactor isotopes revenue reflects a significant portion of Nordion’s Medical Isotopes revenue growth and is not expected to be permanent, as the additional orders that have already been largely received by Nordion is a result of the shutdown of key reactors and processing facilities, which have since returned to service.

The Board of Directors has extended the company's current stock repurchase program for an additional year until April 2015, unless extended or otherwise completed earlier, and has total authorization under the program to purchase 340,000 shares, or 4% of the company's currently outstanding common stock. Looking ahead, the company intends to maintain its capital strength at the current level to support growth and its acquisition activities. Accordingly, future stock buybacks and future dividends will be premised largely on the company's future earnings power rather than a return of capital to stockholders. The company's estimated total risk-based capital ratio at March 31 was 13.8%, significantly exceeding the required minimum of 10% to be considered a well-capitalized institution. The ratio of tangible common equity to total tangible assets was 8.7% as of March 31.

GrafTech International announced that it has mailed a letter to stockholders in connection with the Company's May 15 Annual Meeting of Stockholders urging them to protect their investment by voting the WHITE proxy card FOR GrafTech’s seven experienced and highly qualified director nominees. In connection with its campaign to reinstall Nathan Milikowsky on the GrafTech Board, the Milikowsky Group has presented a platform that, if implemented, would be detrimental to stockholder value. In addition, the only Milikowsky Group initiatives based on sound business principles are those that the GrafTech Board has long been driving and that were implemented before the Milikowsky Group launched its proxy contest. Apart from the initiatives underway at GrafTech, the strategies presented by the Milikowsky Group are either unsound, based on flawed assumptions, misleading in nature or simply inappropriate for a global carbon and graphite material sciences business like GrafTech.

16:15 EDTDLNG, STODynagas LNG acquired Arctic Aurora for $235M
Dynagas LNG Partners (DLNG) announced that it has entered into an agreement to purchase from Dynagas Holding Ltd., the Partnership's sponsor, 100% of the ownership interests in the entity that owns and operates the Arctic Aurora, a 2013 built ice class liquefied natural gas carrier, for an aggregate purchase price of $235M. The Arctic Aurora acquisition is subject to the Partnership obtaining the funds necessary to pay the purchase price and the satisfaction of certain closing conditions. The Partnership expects to finance the acquisition with the net proceeds of a public offering of its common units and a portion of the borrowings under a new $340M senior secured revolving credit facility. The Partnership believes that the Arctic Aurora acquisition is an accretive transaction consistent with its growth strategy. The Arctic Aurora acquisition will generate, assuming full utilization, total contracted gross revenue of approximately $117.2M, annual gross revenues of approximately $28.3M and annual net cash from operations of approximately $21.7M, during the initial charter period with Statoil (STO). The board of the partnership and the Conflicts Committee of the Board have approved the Arctic Aurora acquisition.

15:42 EDTGMGM 'trims' expectations for remaining quarters after Q1 outperformance
On its earnings conference call this morning, General Motors noted that in February the company indicated that its Q1 earnings were going to be in the range of 10%-15% of its total earnings for the year. However, the company said that its Q1 out performance was "fundamentally cost driven" and that it expects to see, for both North America and the corporation, a "more normalized" cadence in its Q2 through Q4 earnings. The company noted that it has not changed its view for the year, though it has "changed the shape of the curve," adding that since it performed better than it had expected in Q1 that it will "have to trim some of the expectations" for Q2 through Q4. Shares of General Motors, which had been higher early in the session following its earnings press release, moved into negative ground during the morning hours. The automaker's stock is down about 1% to $34.04 in late afternoon trading.

15:20 EDTSCHWFINRA board reverses hearing decision, finds Schwab violated rules
The Board of Governors of FINRA issued a decision finding Charles Schwab violated FINRA rules when the firm attempted to keep investors from participating in judicial class actions by adding waiver language to customer account agreements. The ruling by the Board affirms in part and reverses in part an earlier FINRA Hearing Panel decision. The Board decision would have remanded the case to the Hearing Panel for a determination of appropriate sanctions. However, Schwab instead entered into a settlement, agreeing to pay a fine of $500,000 and to notify all of its customers that the Class Action Waiver requirement has been withdrawn from its customer account agreements and is no longer in effect. This fully resolves the matter.

14:33 EDTORMPOramed says ORMD-0801 appeared safe and well-tolerated in phase IIa trial
Oramed Pharmaceuticals announced detailed results from its previously completed Phase IIa trial investigating ORMD-0801, its orally ingestible insulin capsule, in type 2 diabetes patients. The preliminary results of this trial were originally announced on January 30. The results showed that ORMD-0801 oral insulin appeared to be safe and well-tolerated for the dosing regimen considered in this study. No hypoglycemic events occurred at any point in any treatment group and no treatment related adverse events were observed. Although the study was not powered to show statistical significance, there were trends observed showing pattern of well-defined and short-term increases in plasma insulin and decreases in blood glucose. Chief Scientific Officer Dr. Miriam Kidron stated, "We are very pleased with the outcome of this study, which showed ORMD-0801 to be safe and well-tolerated. Importantly, the decreases in blood glucose we observed were not associated with any hypoglycemic events. We look forward to moving ahead with our planned U.S. Phase IIb trial in individuals with type 2 diabetes which will investigate ORMD-0801 over a longer treatment period and which will have statistical power to give us greater insight into the drug's efficacy."

14:15 EDTVEarnings Preview: Visa to report results amid mixed signs for credit cards
Visa (V) is scheduled to report second quarter earnings after the market close on Thursday, April 24, with a conference call scheduled for 5:00 pm ET. Visa is a credit card network. EXPECTATIONS: Analysts are looking for earnings per share of $2.18 on revenue of $3.19B, according to First Call. The consensus range for EPS is $2.12-$2.26 on revenue of $3.15B-$3.22B. LAST QUARTER: Visa reported higher than expected first quarter profits and revenue. The company reiterated its guidance for fiscal EPS growth in the mid to high teen percentage levels. It reported that its payments volume, on a constant dollar basis, had grown 11% year-over-year to $1.2 T. METRICS: The credit card metrics reported by the nation's largest banks for Q1 have mostly been positive. Wells Fargo (WFC) reported that its average credit card balance had risen to over $26,000 last quarter, up from over $24,000 in the same period a year earlier. The proportion of Wells' retail banking customers that utilized the bank's credit cards rose to 38%, versus 34% in the first quarter of 2013. And JPMorgan's (JPM) credit card volume rose 10% last quarter, versus the first quarter of 2013. On the other hand, revenue from Citigroup's (C) credit cards were roughly flat year-over-year. Credit metrics at the major banks that reported their Q1 results have generally improved. American Express (AXP) last week reported higher than expected Q1 EPS but lower than expected revenue. Discover (DFS) reported higher than expected Q1 EPs and revenue that was in-line with analysts' expectations. STREET RESEARCH: Janney Capital upgraded Visa to Buy from Hold in a note to investors on April 15. The stock's previous decline created an attractive entry point, as the company has one of the better business models in the payments sector, the firm contended. Visa's EPS can grow 15%-20%, the firm stated. Meanwhile, research firm Oppenheimer wrote on April 17 that Visa's fundamental environment remains stable, while the company's results should stay solid. The firm recommended that investors use the recent weakness in the stock to become more aggressive on the shares. Oppenheimer kept an Outperform rating on Visa. PRICE ACTION: Visa is up 25% in the last year, but it has only gained 3% in the last six months.

14:05 EDTTreasury Action: yields dipped toward the lower end of the intraday range
Treasury Action: yields dipped toward the lower end of the intraday range after the decent 7-year sale successfully completed the week's offerings. Supply now lightens into month-end with just bills and the $15 B 2-year FRN next week. Sources reported profit taking on curve flattening trades provided some support too. Ukraine tensions also factor in and are limiting selling pressure as the 10-year yield approaches the 200-day moving average at 2.72%. There's not a lot left on the week's calendar with only a smattering of earnings tomorrow after today's busiest day of the season. Data is thin tomorrow with just final consumer sentiment, the Markit flash PMI, and pending home sales. The markets await the May 2 jobs report, while the upcoming FOMC meeting isn't likely to be a game changer. There's been increasing speculation, however, that the Treasury will announce supply cuts with the April 30 refunding details.

Stocks on Wall Street were higher at midday following reports from some of the biggest names in technology and ahead of reports tonight from several other tech giants. The averages opened in positive territory, with the tech-heavy Nasdaq up more than 1% soon after the opening bell. The index was unable to hold its early gains and moved into negative territory, taking the other major averages with it. The indexes were able to keep their losses to a minimum and eventually regrouped and made it back onto positive ground, where they stood near noon. ECONOMIC EVENTS: In the U.S., initial jobless claims rose 24K from the prior week to 329K in the week ended April 19, which was above the 315K consensus forecast of analysts, though there may have been some impact from Easter as the Bureau of Labor Statistics noted difficulty adjusting the data around the holiday. Durable goods orders rose 2.6% in March, beating the 2.0% increase that was forecast. Outside the U.S., Russia said it launched military exercises along the Ukrainian border after Ukrainian forces killed pro-Russian militants. COMPANY NEWS: Shares of Apple (AAPL) advanced more than 8% after the company reported significantly better than expected quarterly earnings and sales, particularly sales of its iPhone. Apple also announced a 7-for-1 stock split that will take effect in June, along with an 8% increase in its quarterly dividend and a $30B increase in its share repurchase authorization. Following last night's report, CLSA upgraded its rating on Apple shares to Buy from Outperform and raised its price target for the stock to $695 from $610, while Jefferies recommended "aggressively" buying shares following the Q2 results and outlook for Q3... Another tech giant, Facebook (FB), also reported earning and revenue that topped expectations last night, sending its shares higher in after-hours trading and prompting a number of price target hikes among Street analysts. However, Facebook also announced that its CFO David Ebersman will step down, to be succeeded by David Wehner, who is currently the company's Vice President of Corporate Finance and Business Planning. The social network operator traded on both sides of the flat-line this morning, but was up a bit over 1% at midday... Shares of General Motors (GM) fell about 2% after the company reported profits that narrowly edged out expectations but revenues that fell short of expectations. GM said its core operating performance has been on plan for the year CEO Mary Barra said the company has seen "no meaningful slowdown" in its U.S. sales despite the negative publicity related to its ongoing ignition switch recall and associated legal matters. MAJOR MOVERS: Among the notable gainers was orthopedic device maker Zimmer Holdings (ZMH), which climbed 11% after it agreed to merge with privately held Biomet in a cash and stock transaction valued at about $13.35B, including the assumption of net debt. Also higher following their earnings reports were Citrix Systems (CTXS), which rose 10%, D.R. Horton (DHI), which gained more than 7%, and Aetna (AET), which advanced 6%. Among the noteworthy losers was chip making giant Qualcomm (QCOM), which slid 3.5% despite reporting profits that beat expectations and raising its yearly EPS outlook, as the company also disclosed the receipt of a notice from the SEC about a potential filing of an enforcement action against the company related to anti-bribery violations. Also lower following their earnings reports were Xilinx (XLNX), which fell about 9%, Raytheon (RTN), which dropped 4%, and Hershey (HSY), which also declined about 4%. Nasdaq futures were sharply higher during the pre-market trading session, thanks in part to shares of Apple (AAPL) and Facebook (FB), which had been higher following their earnings reports last night. The Dow and S&P futures lagged, but the futures action still led to a higher open for all three, led by the tech-heavy Nasdaq. However, the Nasdaq, like shares of Facebook, has given up its early session gains and turned slightly negative about 30 minutes into trading. Amid a busy morning for earnings reports and associated conference calls, the Dow is down 28 points, the Nasdaq is down 10 points and the S&P is down 3 points.

The FDA proposed a new rule that would extend the agency's tobacco authority to cover additional tobacco products. It stated, "Products that would be 'deemed' to be subject to FDA regulation are those that meet the statutory definition of a tobacco product, including currently unregulated marketed products, such as electronic cigarettes, cigars, pipe tobacco, nicotine gels, waterpipe tobacco, and dissolvables not already under the FDA’s authority." Consistent with currently regulated tobacco products, under the proposed rule, makers of newly deemed tobacco products would, among other requirements: Register with the FDA and report product and ingredient listings; Only market new tobacco products after FDA review; Only make direct and implied claims of reduced risk if the FDA confirms that scientific evidence supports the claim and that marketing the product will benefit public health as a whole; and Not distribute free samples. Makers of e-cigarettes include Altria (MO), Reynolds American (RAI) and Lorillard (LO). Reference Link

09:20 EDTToday's U.S. durables report
Today's U.S. durables report revealed the expected March transportation boost, after a similar lift in February but sizable hits in December and January, with an additional big durable orders boost from defense that lifted ex-transportation. Analysts saw the expected equipment sector gains that reversed disappointing January and February data, with modest shipment and inventory gains that left a report that was only modest stronger than expected overall. Analysts still expect Q1 real GDP growth of 1.0% with a comparable 1% growth rate for real equipment spending and a big $24 B hit from inventories that leaves a still-lofty $88 B accumulation rate, following Q4 growth rates of 2.6% for GDP and 10.9% for equipment with a small $4 B inventory subtraction. For Q2, analysts still assume 3.2% GDP growth with an 8% growth rate for equipment and a $41 B inventory hit. Analysts expect a 0.5% March rise for both factory inventories and business inventories, given today's 0.5% factory durable inventory increase. Analysts now assume a 1.8% March factory orders bounce with a 1.0% factory shipments rise, given an assumed 1.0% nondurables increase.

08:50 EDTThe 24k U.S. initial claims pop to 329k
The 24k U.S. initial claims pop to 329k in the week of Good Friday extended the 4k up-tick to 305k (was 304k) in the BLS survey week from a 301k (was 302k) cycle-low, leaving a pop after depressed earlier figures that analysts would attribute to the late-Easter. On an NSA basis, claims fell 21k after three weeks of gains. Despite today's rise, analysts have a big claims drop from the weather-boosted 351k late-February reading. Claims have averaged 325k over the twelve weeks since the two-month stretch of winter holiday distortions ended, which is below the 332k average in September-October of last year before holiday distortions took effect. Claims have averaged just 313k thus far in April, versus higher prior averages of 320k in March, 337k in February, and 333k in January. The 305k BLS survey week reading undershot prior BLS readings of 323k in March, 334k in February, and 329k in January. Analysts still assume a 200k April payroll gain that enjoys a further post-winter updraft, though the gain only modestly exceeds recent increases of 192k in March and 197k in February.

Intevac issued an open letter to Intevac stockholders regarding the Company’s 2014 Annual Meeting of Stockholders, to be held on May 14, 2014. An activist hedge fund, Voce Catalyst Partners LP, which is affiliated with Voce Capital LLC and Voce Capital Management LLC, has disclosed an ownership of about half of a percent of Intevac’s outstanding common stock. Voce Capital is trying to oust three experienced and integral members of Intevac’s Board and replace them with Voce Capital nominees. The company says "By posing unanswered questions, Intevac believes Voce Capital is either being intentionally vague about its intentions or stepping back from the value destroying actions it had advocated. Stockholders should not allow Voce Capital’s vacillating behavior into their boardroom. Once again, we need excellence and not mediocrity. Intevac stockholders should ask themselves if they believe that they can trust Voce Capital’s nominees to work with the Intevac Board and management team to increase the value their investment. We think that it is patently obvious the answer is ‘no’."

U.S. initial jobless claims preview: jobless claims are expected to rise 11k to 315k (median 313k) in the week-ended April 19 to mark a give-back from the recently low readings seen in April. Continuing claims are expected to rise 54k to 2,793k for the week-ended April 12. Forecast risk is downward, as claims may fail to give-back as expected and may settle at a sub-310k level. Analysts also tend to see large swings in claims around the Easter holiday. In 2013, the two weeks leading up to Easter saw a 21k rise, followed by a 27k decline, netting a 6k decline over the two weeks. For more detail, see our initial jobless claims preview.

08:19 EDTRICRichmont Mines exposes Island Gold Deep C Zone mineralization over 92 meters
Richmont Mines announced that access to the upper portion of the Island Gold Deep resource has been achieved with approximately 130 meters of development into the C Zone, on claims that are 100% owned by the corporation, at a vertical depth of 560 meters. An approximate 92 meter length of this development is well mineralized, and corresponds well with the previously established resource. Chip sample results obtained for the C mineralized zone during lateral drift development over the 92 meters averaged a cut grade of 12.73 g/t over an average width of 2.92 meters. This grade value should be seen as indicative, as the capping value used needs to be confirmed by further studies. Results from definition drilling completed within the deep resource offer additional confirmation of prior exploration data for Island Gold Deep. Approximately 5,000 meters of definition drilling has been done in the upper part of the C zone resource at 25 meter spacing, and results will enable a better definition of the resource limits for both the C and B zones. Ramp development is ahead of schedule and currently at the 610 meter level, and is on pace to reach a depth of 635 meters before year-end.

Reports Q1 revenue $170.1M, one estimate $158.3M. Todd Cleveland, president and CEO, stated, "We are pleased with our revenues and our operating income performance in the Q1. The severe winter weather we experienced in the Midwest in early 2014 did cause some additional costs related to production, scheduling, and delivery inefficiencies, but the impact was not significant to our overall operating results in Q1. We did see a continuing seasonal sales pickup each month consistent with our expectations and general positive industry sentiment, and we continue to believe that all three of the primary markets we serve are well positioned for further growth in 2014."

07:49 EDTMDWMidway Gold forecasts capital reductions at Pan project
Midway Gold provided an update on recent developments and scope changes at the Pan Project, including potential reduction in pre-production capital requirements. Construction at Pan remains on-track for initial production in 2014. Midway has elected to pursue contract mining in the initial years at Pan. Midway had planned to pursue owner mining, but conditions in the mining industry have led to an increasingly attractive price environment for contract mining. Contract mining reduces the initial capital requirements for Pan by deferring purchase of the planned mine fleet. It also minimizes initial start-up and operational risks. Also, the company has elected to defer purchase and installation of crushers for the first 2-3 years of the mine life at Pan. Midway is currently well funded with $48M in cash as of December 31, 2013. Construction progress remains on track for 2014 gold production at Pan. Project financing is well advanced and expected to be complete in the second quarter of 2014, the company said.

Celsion announced that updated results from the 701 patient HEAT Study post-hoc analysis, as well as a review of the final study design of the Phase III OPTIMA Study, which both explore ThermoDox, Celsion's proprietary heat-activated liposomal encapsulation of doxorubicin, in combination with radiofrequency ablation, or RFA, for the treatment of hepatocellular carcinoma, or HCC, or primary liver cancer, were presented at the 5th European Conference on Interventional Oncology, or ECIO, on April 24 in Berlin, Germany. Data from the latest HEAT Study post-hoc analysis as of March 31 suggest that ThermoDox may markedly improve overall survival, or OS, compared to RFA control, in patients whose lesions undergo RFA treatment for 45 minutes or more. These findings apply to patients with single HCC lesions from both size cohorts of the HEAT study and represent a subgroup of 285 patients. For this subgroup, clinical results indicate a 50% improvement in overall survival, a Hazard Ratio of 0.666, and a p-Value of 0.06. It is important to note that the median overall survival for this subgroup has not yet been reached.

Now sees FY14 reported EPS $2.70-$2.78. Sees FY14 revenue $19.4B-$20B, consensus $19.75B. . As described in the company's initial guidance, patent expirations are expected to drive a rapid and severe decline in U.S. Cymbalta and U.S. Evista sales. These revenue declines are expected to be partially offset by growth from a portfolio of other products including Humalog, Trajenta®, Cialis, Forteo and Alimta, as well as the animal health business. In addition, strong revenue growth is expected in China, while a weaker Japanese yen will dampen revenue growth in Japan. The company now anticipates that gross margin as a percent of revenue will be approximately 73% in 2014. Total operating expenses in 2014 are expected to decrease substantially compared to 2013. The 2014 tax rate is now expected to be approximately 19%, assuming a full-year 2014 benefit of the R&D tax credit and other tax provisions up for extension. If these items are not extended, the 2014 tax rate would be approximately 2 percentage points higher. The company now expects 2014 net income to be at least $2.9B and still expects operating cash flow to be at least $4B. Operating cash flows are still expected to be sufficient to pay the company's dividend of approximately $2.1B, allow for capital expenditures of approximately $1.3B, and fund certain business development activity and share repurchases. The company's 2014 financial guidance assumes that the acquisition of Novartis Animal Health does not close during this calendar year. Should the acquisition close during 2014, the company will revise its 2014 financial guidance, if necessary.
