10:49 EDTALBAlbemarle slides after giving guidance on earnings call
Share of specialty chemicals company Albemarle (ALB) are sharply lower and continuing to slide as its fourth quarter earnings call continues. Last night, the company reported Q4 adjusted EPS and revenue that missed analysts' consensus expectations. On its call this morning, the company said that its resources will be directed towards maximizing the potential of its four core businesses, namely lithium, catalyst, surface treatment and bromine, and it will pursue strategic alternatives for its three other businesses. The company said it will launch its sale process for its non-core businesses in February, with a goal of closing transactions by year end. Albemarle guided toward FY15 revenue of $3.7B-$4B, versus the consensus view of $4.22B. Albemarle said it sees FY15 EPS of $3.15-$3.70. Consensus for FY15 EPS prior to the call stood at $4.95. The company also said it sees potential for "both upside or downside" to its FY15 forecasts, depending on how currency plays out. Albemarle shares are down nearly 12% to $48.72 in morning trading as its earning call continues.

10:30 EDTTreasury auction outlooks: Treasury is selling 5- and 7-year notes
Treasury auction outlooks: Treasury is selling 5- and 7-year notes, with the former rescheduled from Wednesday due to the snowstorm. The bid deadline for the 5-year was moved up to 11:30 ET. The unusual double-up could create some indigestion as the market will have to take down $64 B in notes today, especially following the big yield drop yesterday. However, the bond-friendly FOMC statement yesterday where the Fed hinted it might not hike rates by mid-year could be supportive, along with ongoing weakness in inflation expectations. The notes are cheapening a bit this morning, but so far set up has been poor and that may limit demand. The wi 5-year rate is up over 3 bps to 1.29%, while the wi 7-year is up 3 bps to 1.58%. Yet those would still be the richest rates since May 2013. The yield premium to core sovereigns overseas should also be supportive. Note the German 5-year trades at -0.033%, with the 7-year at 0.072%. Month-end and the 0.09 year duration extension should be marginally beneficial for the longer note.

10:26 EDTFBFacebook shares little changed despite analysts lauding results
Facebook (FB) reported better than expected fourth quarter earning and revenue last night and a number of analysts responded positively to the news, though the social network operator's shares are little changed in early trading. BACKGROUND: Facebook reported fourth quarter EPS of 54c, compared with analysts' consensus estimate of 48c. The company's revenue came in slightly above expectations. The social network said that its monthly active user base grew 13% last quarter versus the same period a year earlier to 1.39B, while its ad revenue surged 53% to $3.6B. ANALYST REACTION: Robert W. Baird analyst Colin Sebastian raised his price target on Facebook to $93 from $80. The social network reported strong results, driven by healthy user engagement and monetization trends, the analyst believes. The company's ongoing large investments in developing ad technology should improve the platforms of the Facebook website, Instagram, and WhatsApp, as well as its developing ad network, Sebastian stated. He kept an Outperform rating on the stock. Cantor analyst Youssef Squali increased his price target on the stock to $90 from $80. The company's Q4 results were solid, as its ad revenue growth was impressive, the analyst stated. Given the ongoing shift of ad dollars to mobile and social, and the untapped revenue potential of a number of Facebook's assets, the stock remains a top pick, the analyst stated. UBS analyst Eric Sheridan was also upbeat on the shares, writing that the stock has one of the most compelling risk/reward ratios among large cap growth stocks he covers. The company continues to have strong user growth and engagement trends, and benefit from strong ad prices, and initiatives that produce advertising market share gains, the analyst stated. Facebook has many ways to increase its revenue going forward, and the stock increasingly looks cheap, according to Sheridan, who kept a $92 price target and Buy rating on the shares.. PRICE ACTION: In early trading, Facebook shares rose fractionally to $76.32.

09:05 EDTU.S. equities snapped higher
U.S. equities snapped higher in the wake of the 43k plunge in jobless claims, reversing some of their earnings-, oil- and Fed-induced collapse on Wednesday, though the 15-year low in the claims data was likely distorted by the MLK holiday week, which the BLS acknowledged. The Dow is 68-points firmer, S&P gained 6-points and NASDAQ is up 7-points ahead of the opening bell, well below overnight highs. This followed declines in Europe and Asia, with the Euro Stoxx 50 0.4% lower, while Japan's Nikkei sank 1.06% and the Shanghai Comp was 1.3% lower. Corporate news featured a 3% rise in McDonald's after it confirmed a new CEO, while Alibaba sank 7.5% after missing forecasts, which pulled down Yahoo too after it announced plans to divest in its stake this week. Qualcomm sank 7% after slashing profit forecasts as well, but Coach and Ford gained after posting better than expected profits. Up next is the NAR pending home sales report.

Chembio Diagnostics has been awarded a grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to expedite the feasibility testing and development of a DPP Malaria POC rapid diagnostic to accurately identify individuals infected with Plasmodium falciparum parasite. Chembio's DPP technology has been selected for this grant due to its exceptional sensitivity and potential to aid the foundation in its goal of eradicating malaria. To achieve this goal, diagnostics must be capable of detecting the malaria parasite in infected, but asymptomatic people. Current POC rapid diagnostics tests lack sufficient sensitivity to identify all individuals with transmissible infections.

08:57 EDTKATEKate Spade, Lane Crawford Joyce Group announce partnership
Kate Spade and Walton Brown, a subsidiary of The Lane Crawford Joyce Group, Asia's premier fashion retail and brand management group, today announced the companies have formed joint ventures focused on scaling and accelerating Kate Spade's growth in Greater China, continuing its geographic expansion plans. The newly formed partnership will leverage the expertise of Walton Brown, and the global demand for Kate Spade & Company products, to establish a strategic network of stores in key cities, enhanced by a robust organizational and marketing platform across China, Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan. The combined transactions are expected to include a $3M payment to E-Land to acquire its interest in Kate Spade China and terminate related contracts and the receipt of approximately $21M from Walton Brown for their interest in the joint ventures subject to adjustments. In addition, the company estimates that it will incur restructuring and transaction costs of approximately $5M, including severance, lease terminations and asset impairments in order to convert the wholly owned businesses in Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan into a joint venture. These transactions are consistent with the company's partnered and capital-efficient approach to geographic expansion and lay the foundation for a solid expansion strategy in the region with a long-term potential of 100 stores. Kate Spade & Company will continue wholesale distribution to the joint venture in China and expects to begin wholesale distribution to Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan through the joint venture during Q1. Accordingly, the company will no longer consolidate the operations for the businesses in Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan, which had net sales of approximately $34M in 2014 and will account for its investments in the partnership under the equity method of accounting. The company's distribution agreements with Valiram in Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia and Australia and AT Luxury in Thailand are not affected by these transactions.

Sees FY15 Industrial Activities operating margin to be between 6.1%-6.4%. Sees net industrial debt at the end of 2015 between $2.2 billion and $2.4 billion, with the expected cash generation during the year resulting primarily from the inventory reduction in the Agricultural Equipment segment. CNH Industrial commented, "The Company expects improved profitability in Commercial Vehicles and Construction Equipment, coupled with structural cost improvement measures from the Company's Efficiency Program now extended to Agricultural Equipment. These actions are expected to buffer, but not fully offset the negative impact from the continuation of challenging trading conditions in the row crop sector of the agricultural industry, and the impact of the recent significant appreciation of the US dollar against the Company's other trading currencies, allowing the Company to hold operating margin unless there are further currency deteriorations from the current rate levels outside the United States."

08:16 EDTALVAutoliv sees Q1 organic sales to increase 3%, operating margin of 8%
The expectation for the full year is for organic sales growth of more than 6%, and an adjusted operating margin of around 9.5%. The company commented, "In 2015 we anticipate an expansion in overall operating margin despite record investments in both capital and R&D. This is made possible by our continued market leadership in passive safety. Our full year growth rate for active safety will be affected by the fact that new launches will mainly come in the later part of 2015. Our electronics margin is negatively affected by the stronger dollar."

Constant-Currency Net Yields are expected to be down 1.5% to 2.0% in the first quarter of 2015. This includes the previously announced shift of holiday sailings from the first quarter of each year to the fourth quarter. While this shift has no impact on the year as a whole, it accounts for most of the decline in first quarter yields. In addition, the overhang of the highly promotional Caribbean environment in 2014 continues through the first quarter of 2015, also impacting yields. Yields in the second, third and fourth quarters are expected to be higher, and will be up in the mid-single digits. NCC excluding fuel are expected to be up 2.0% to 3.0% on a Constant-Currency basis.

Phillips 66 said that in Midstream, the 100,000 BPD Sweeny Fractionator One is more than 50% complete, with startup planned in the second half of 2015. Construction is also progressing on the 4.4 million-barrel-per-month Freeport LPG Export Terminal, with completion expected in the second half of 2016. Both projects remain on budget and on schedule. Phillips 66 Partners formed two joint ventures to develop the Palermo Rail Terminal and the Sacagawea Pipeline in North Dakota. The Palermo Rail Terminal is a crude oil rail-loading facility currently under construction. The terminal is anticipated to include a pipeline connection to the Sacagawea Pipeline, allowing increased outbound capacity and market access for oil producers and marketers in the Bakken region. In Chemicals, CPChem is investing in domestic growth projects to capture the benefits of low-cost petrochemical feedstocks on the U.S. Gulf Coast. During the quarter, CPChem completed the expansion of ethylene production at its Sweeny facility with the addition of a tenth furnace, which is expected to increase its annual production by 200M pounds. An expansion project is underway to increase CPChem's normal alpha olefin capacity by 220M pounds per year at its Cedar Bayou facility, with estimated completion in mid-2015. Lastly, construction continued on its world-scale USGC Petrochemicals Project with startup anticipated in mid-2017.

07:27 EDTFFord Credit reports Q4 pre-tax profit $423M vs. $368M last year
In Q4, Ford Credit’s pre-tax profit was $423M, an increase of $55M from a year ago. It stated, "The improved pre-tax profit is more than explained by higher volume and favorable market valuation adjustments to derivatives. A partial offset is lower financing margin." Ford Credit reported Q4 net income of $411M, compared with $568M a year earlier. The decrease in net income was primarily driven by the non-recurrence of favorable tax items recorded in Q4 of 2013. On Dec. 31, 2014, Ford Credit’s total net receivables were $108B, compared with $100B at year-end 2013. For 2015, Ford Credit expects full-year pre-tax profit to be equal to or higher than 2014, year-end managed receivables of $123B-$128B, managed leverage to continue in the range of 8:1 to 9:1, and distributions to its parent of about $250M.

Xencor reported top-line interim results from a Phase 1a study for XmAb7195. The data show rapid reduction of circulating free IgE levels to below the limit of detection in 90% of XmAb7195 treated subjects that had detectable free IgE pre-dose, including those at the lowest dose evaluated of 0.3 mg/kg. Total IgE levels were also reduced in a parallel fashion. A dose limiting toxicity of transient, asymptomatic thrombocytopenia was observed at the 3.0 mg/kg dose. Two subjects with high pre-dose IgE levels were treated with XmAb7195, one each at 0.75 mg/kg and 3.0 mg/kg doses, and both had reduction of free IgE levels to below the limit of detection lasting for at least one week. XmAb7195 is an anti-IgE monoclonal antibody containing Xencor's proprietary XmAb Immune Inhibitor Fc domain that targets FcãRIIb, which results in rapid clearance of free and total IgE and inhibition of the function of IgE expressing B cells.

07:19 EDTRDHLRedHill provides update on RHB-104 Phase III program following FDA meeting
RedHill Biopharma provided an update on the progress with the ongoing RHB-104 Phase III development program for the treatment of Crohn's disease. The company, together with Quest Diagnostics, recently concluded a pre-submission meeting with the FDA regarding the development path of a commercial companion diagnostic test for the detection of Mycobacterium avium subspecies paratuberculosis, or MAP, in Crohn's disease patients. Following the constructive FDA meeting, RedHill intends to initiate a study of approximately 40 Crohn's disease patients to assess the clinical utility of the companion diagnostic test during Q2 or Q3. RedHill is collaborating with Quest Diagnostics for the development of the potential companion diagnostic test, which is an extension of RedHill's development program for the Company's Crohn's disease drug, RHB-104, currently undergoing a first Phase III study. RHB-104 is a proprietary and potentially groundbreaking antibiotic combination therapy in oral capsule formulation, with potent intracellular, antimycobacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. The development of RHB-104 and the MAP companion diagnostic test is based on increasing evidence supporting the hypothesis that Crohn's disease is caused by MAP infection in susceptible patients. RedHill previously announced that it acquired the rights to patented technologies from the University of Minnesota and the University of Central Florida to support the development of this diagnostic test. There is currently no validated, FDA-approved, commercially available method of detecting the presence or absence of MAP in patients suffering from Crohn's disease and other diseases. RedHill further announced that a protocol amendment has been filed with the FDA to the approved IND in relation to the ongoing Phase III MAP US study with RHB-104 for the treatment of Crohn's disease. As part of the amendment, the number of subjects planned to be enrolled in the study has been increased from 240 to 270 in order to account for potential drop-outs from the study. Additionally, the amendment allows for the inclusion of Crohn's disease patients with moderate to severe disease despite current treatment with anti-Tumor Necrosis Factor therapies infliximab and adalimumab. The inclusion of these concomitant medications significantly increases the number of Crohn's disease patients potentially eligible to enroll in the ongoing Phase III MAP US study. With 66 clinical sites actively enrolling patients, RedHill also plans to increase the number of clinical sites in the Phase III MAP US study, currently ongoing in the U.S., Canada and Israel, from 100 to 120, including new sites in Australia, New Zealand and Europe.

07:03 EDTDOWDow Chemical sees lower oil prices as relative positive
Commenting on the Company’s outlook, Liveris said: “Against the backdrop of ongoing macroeconomic, currency and energy market uncertainty, we continue to see positive underlying demand fundamentals. Dow is well positioned to continue to optimize returns in this environment: Our advantaged global cost positions are enabling us to increase asset utilization, while selling into higher value sectors. Tightening supply and demand is acting to offset some of the challenges that are a result of falling oil prices. Our differentiated technologies and end-market selection will enable us to maximize returns in sectors less susceptible to pricing volatility. Our business model works across all economic cycles, as we can extract value through different parts of our integrated value chains – depending on the cycle. We believe lower oil prices are a relative positive for Dow and a boost for the global economy. We will continue to control those factors firmly within our control – demanding operational and commercial excellence, driving proactive portfolio management and productivity actions, executing financial discipline, efficiently managing our cash and investing in people, markets and assets for long-term growth."

06:52 EDTAKAMAkamai reports DDoS attack traffic up 57% year-over-year
Akamai Technologies announced the availability of the Q4 State of the Internet – Security Report. "An incredible number of DDoS attacks occurred in the fourth quarter, almost double what we observed in Q4 a year ago," said John Summers, vice president, Cloud Security Business Unit, Akamai. "Denial of service is a common and active threat to a wide range of enterprises. The DDoS attack traffic was not limited to a single industry, such as online entertainment that made headlines in December. Instead, attacks were spread among a wide variety of industries." Akamai also observed a 52% increase in average peak bandwidth of DDoS attacks compared to Q4 a year ago. Large packets of unwanted network traffic can quickly sap an enterprise's ability to respond to legitimate customers, resulting in denial of service outages. Most unprotected sites cannot withstand a typical DDoS attack. As a result, DDoS attacks have become part of the common cybersecurity threatscape that all enterprises with an online presence must anticipate in a risk assessment. Resourceful DDoS-for-hire booter suites took a low-investment approach by tapping into reflection-based DDoS attacks. Nearly 40% of all DDoS attacks used reflection techniques, which rely on Internet protocols that respond with more traffic than they receive and do not require an attacker to gain control over the server or device. Widespread availability of for-hire DDoS services allowed low-level, non-technical attackers to purchase ready-to-use DDoS services. The expansion of the DDoS-for-hire market also promoted the use of multi-vector campaigns, as the competitive market drove attack innovation. Significantly more multi-vector attacks were observed – 88% more than in 4Q13. More than 44% of all attacks used multiple attack vectors.

Indicating further delays and possible cancellation of the deal, regulators from the Federal Trade Commission sent subpoenas to a third-party food distributor this week regarding Sysco's (SYY) $8.2B merger with US Foods, reports the New York Post, citing a source with direct knowledge of the situation. The source said it is "shockingly unclear" whether the FTC is gathering information in order to approve the deal or to block it. Blackstone's (BX) Performance Food Group, which earlier agreed to buy $5B of Sysco assets to make Sysco's merger more palatable to regulators, did not receive a subpoena. Reference Link

Organic capital investment in 2015 is expected to be lower than 2014 levels, and we have curtailed over $15 billion of potential spending over the next three years. Shell has options to further reduce spending, but says it is not over-reacting to current low oil prices and keeping our best opportunities on the table. New restructuring programmes in world-wide resources plays and upstream engines, leveraging oil price downturn to capture multi-billion supply chain cost opportunities world-wide, and plans to reduce Shell's operating costs in 2015. 2015 should see further ramp-up from the new fields brought on line in 2014. The company continues to invest in a competitive suite of new oil & gas fields and LNG, with the next wave of significant start-ups in the 2016-18 timeframe.

05:30 EDTFX Action: USD-JPY remains on a broadly sideways path
FX Action: USD-JPY remains on a broadly sideways path, anchored on 118.00, which has roughly been the mid-point of trade for most of January so far. Analysts expect USD-JPY will be biased higher in the bigger picture as 'Abenomics' policies remain alive and well in Japan. A Bloomberg survey last week found 26 of 33 of economists forecasting new BoJ monetary expansion by the end of October. The pronounced decline in EUR-JPY will have also strengthen the yen in trade-weighted terms, which is another factor that some analysts (including a research piece by Barclays this week) will also push the BoJ toward a new easing. USD-JPY support is at 117.25, resistance at 118.83-87 and 119.00.

The company said, "The Taiwan government authorities recently approved UMC's application to invest in a 12" joint venture fab in Xiamen, China.
