Overall, Retail Metrics said same-store sales rose 3.3%, beating expectations by 90 basis points. There was strength across virtually all segments, with teen apparel retailers' sales jumping 7.2%, department stores' same-store sales rising 2.7%, and general apparel retailers surging 7.5%. Gift cards and holiday sales helped lead same-store sales higher, Retail Metrics said. Macy's (M) raised its Q4 and 2010 EPS guidance after reporting January same store sales rose 3.4% versus the Retail Metrics estimate of flat sales. The retailer increased its Q4 EPS guidance to $1.35-$1.37 from $1.14-$1.18 and increased its FY09 EPS outlook to $1.36-$1.38 from $1.15-$1.19 versus the consensus of $1.18. Kohl's (KSS) increased its Q4 EPS guidance to $1.36-$1.37 from $1.28-$1.30, after its January same-store sales climbed 6.5%, versus the Retail Metrics estimate of a 2.6% gain. Abercrombie & Fitch's (ANF) January same-store sales rose 8%, versus the Retail Metrics outlook for an 8.6% drop. Zumiez's (ZUMZ) January same-store sales increased 1.8%, versus the consensus of a decline of 1.2%. Target (TGT) missed expectations, as its January comparable sales inched up 0.5%, versus the Retail Metrics estimate of a 1.3% gain. Meanwhile, Costco (COST) narrowly beat expectations, as its January same-store sales climbed 8%, versus the Retail Metrics estimate of 7.2%. :theflyonthewall.com |
