The market opened higher courtesy of the headline news that unemployment had dropped, though analysts had predicted it would tick up to 8.2%. The market move has been somewhat muted, as analysts picked through the numbers and found the data included a large proportion of both government and part-time workers. The averages found their level early in the session and have remained in a narrow range ever since... ECONOMIC EVENTS: In the U.S., the headline unemployment rate unexpectedly fell to 7.8% in September, the lowest since January 2009, as the economy added 114,000 workers. Economists' estimates called for an advance of 115,000. Hourly earnings climbed more than forecast as well, according to the Labor Department's data. In Europe, a report showed that German industrial orders dropped more than expected in August... COMPANY NEWS: Zynga (ZNGA) lowered its outlook for the second time this year, cutting its FY12 bookings view and saying it now expects to break even or lose money in Q3. Among the noteworthy losers were Mercury Computer (MRCY), down over 17% following downgrades at Sterne Agee and Lazard Capital after the company lowered its Q1 earnings and revenue guidance, and Curtiss-Wright (CW), down nearly 2% after lowering its FY12 EPS view to $2.05-$2.15 from $2.50-$2.60...
