The averages finished mixed for the day, though finished up for the week, following the release of the September jobs report. the markets enjoyed an early rally today, but further parsing of the jobs data tempered the rally and stocks drifted lower through the afternoon. The official kickoff of the third quarter earnings season comes Tuesday, when Alcoa (AA) reports its earnings... ECONOMIC EVENTS: In the U.S., the headline unemployment rate unexpectedly fell to 7.8% in September, the lowest since January 2009, as the economy added 114,000 workers. Economists' estimates called for an advance of 115,000. Analysts, however, found that the unemployment data included a large proportion of government and part-time workers, somewhat muting the reception of the data. The August Consumer Credit report showed U.S. consumer credit rose to $18.12B, up from the expected $7.8B... COMPANY NEWS: Zynga (ZNGA) lowered its outlook for the second time this year, cutting its FY12 earnings view and saying it now expects to break even or lose money in Q3. Zynga shares plunged 34c, or 11.90%, to $2.48 after the announcement. Facebook (FB) shares also fell $1.04, or 4.73%, to $20.91, after JPMorgan lowered its 2013 Facebook Payments revenue estimate following Zynga's negative pre-announcement... MAJOR MOVERS: Among the notable gainers was Avon Products (AVP), up $1.17, or 7.21%, to $17.39 after it announced the departure of its executive chairman and Wells Fargo spoke positively of the personnel change. Fleetmatics (FLTX) also debuted positively on the day, after the stock closed up $5.30, up 31.18%, to $22.30 from its IPO price of $17.00 per share. Falling on the day was the stock of Mercury Computer (MRCY), down $1.34, or 13.90%, to $8.30 after lowering its Q1 earnings and guidance and receiving downgrades from Stern Agee and Lazard Capital. Also down were shares of FirstSolar (FSLR), down $2.48, or 11.00%, to $20.07 after a negative mention at Deutsche Bank and a downgrade at Avian amid concerns over quality issues with its modules... INDICES: The Dow rose 34.79, or 0.26%, to 13,610.15; the Nasdaq fell 13.27, or 0.42%, to 3,136.19; and the S&P 500 slid 0.47, or 0.03%, to 1,460.93.
