News Breaks | | | | May 4, 2012 | | 14:32 EDT | | FB, YHOO, MSFT, BKS | Stocks poised for lower week on U.S. economy, French election worries Stocks are set to end the week lower, after the government reported that the U.S. economy had created fewer jobs than expected in April, and investors worried about the fallout from Sunday's French presidential election. MACRO NEWS: The U.S. economy added 115,000 non-farm jobs in April, significantly lower than the consensus estimate of 165,000. However, the unemployment rate dropped to 8.1% from 8.2%. Some investors worried that the jobs data was weak, but not weak enough for the Federal Reserve to embark on a new round of quantitative easing....This Sunday's election in France is also on the minds of investors, as concerns continue that socialist Francois Hollande, narrowly ahead in the polls, could win the contest and force changes in the euro zone's economic policies...Yesterday's weaker than expected ISM non-manufacturing index for April also weighed on stocks. COMPANY NEWS: Microsoft (MSFT) agreed to invest $300M in Barnes & Noble's (BKS) Nook and college bookstore business...Yahoo's (YHOO) largest investor, Third Point, called for the company's CEO, Scott Thompson, to be fired, after Yahoo admitted that the college major listed on Thompson's resume was inaccurate....Facebook (FB) disclosed that it plans to sell 337.4M shares in its upcoming IPO, and set a $28--$35 price range for the shares. | |

However, Piper feels the deal is too small to materially change Yahoo's growth rate and continues to view the Alibaba IPO as the biggest part of the Yahoo story. The firm raised its price target for shares to $27 from $21 and keeps a Neutral rating on the name. | | | | 10:52 EDT | | FB | Facebook near session lows, levels to watch The stock is drifting lower today, nearing session lows at $25.73.
