09:02 EDTLMT, XLSExelis receives follow-up contract from Lockheed unit for $8.4M
Exelis (XLS) recently received a follow-on contract valued at $8.4M from Lockheed Martin's (LMT)Aeronautics company, Fort Worth, Texas, to supply Continuous Wave Illuminator subsystems for F-16 Fighting Falcon aircraft. The Exelis CWI subsystem is a transmitter that works with the F-16’s fire control radar and mission computer to provide guidance for semi-active missiles. Using radio frequency energy, the system illuminates airborne targets to increase accuracy and ensure the missile finds its intended target. Exelis in Clifton, New Jersey, will perform the manufacturing work under this contract, with deliveries to be completed in FY17. The initial contract award, for $9.4M, was received in September 2012.

Exelis, UrsaNav, the Department of Homeland Security’s Science and Technology Directorate and the U.S. Coast Guard have entered into a cooperative research and development agreement for testing and demonstration at former LORAN-C sites. These sites are the legacy ground-based radio navigation infrastructure of the decommissioned LORAN-C service that could be retained and upgraded to provide eLORAN low frequency service. The team will evaluate eLORAN as a potential complementary system to the current Global Positioning System currently in wide use throughout the United States. The capabilities and potential utilization methods of eLORAN will be explored in depth to identify all strengths, capacities, and potential vulnerabilities of the technology.

Exelis (XLS) and Leidos (LDOS) have been selected to continue to evolve advanced technology development for the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency's Adaptive Radar Countermeasures program. The five-year subcontract from Leidos could be worth up to $15.6M if all options are exercised. During this second phase of the program, Exelis will demonstrate the Leidos software-based algorithms with Exelis electronic warfare hardware in the loop test environment, showcasing an enhanced capability to electronically defend against emerging radar threats. The ARC program will enable U.S. airborne EW systems to detect and adaptively counter radar systems whose waveforms and behaviors are new, unknown or ambiguous.
