13:06 EDTWUAnalysts weigh in on potential Western Union, MoneyGram deal
An acquisition of MoneyGram (MGI) by Western Union (WU) makes sense for Western Union from a strategic perspective and would boost its profits, Wells Fargo wrote in a note to investors earlier today. Meanwhile, analysts at JPMorgan told investors this morning that the potential merger talk is surprising since antitrust regulators objected to a combination between the two companies twenty years ago. The opinions were issued after Bloomberg reported last night, citing unnamed sources, that Western Union is in early talks about buying MoneyGram, which also facilitates money transfers. ANALYST REACTION: Buying MoneyGram, would enable Western Union to remove one of its lower cost, formidable competitors, Wells Fargo analyst Timothy Willi wrote. In addition, Western Union would have the opportunity to obtain operational and marketing synergies from the deal, the analyst believes. The deal would increase Western Union's profits in 2016 before synergies, according to Willi, who estimated that the synergies would increase the company's earnings per share by about 20c for each 10% of savings on MoneyGram's expenses. Addressing regulatory concerns, Willi said that a deal could be approved, given the companies' relatively modest share of the global payment services market and the "vibrant" competition in the sector. Willi kept an Outperform rating on Western Union. Also weighing in on the potential deal was JPMorgan analyst Tien-tsin Huang. Western Union's synergies from the deal would be "complicated" by whether or not it decides to retain MoneyGram's name and by tax issues, Huang believes. However, the takeover could raise Western Union's profits if the company bought MoneyGram for $10-$11 per share. However, the deal could lower Western Union's profits if it pays over $20 for MoneyGram, according to the analyst, who kept an Overweight rating on MoneyGram. WHAT'S NOTABLE: Shares of MoneyGram are off their highs in afternoon trading after Western Union trading was halted for pending news, which has yet to be released by the company near 1 pm EDT. PRICE ACTION: In early afternoon trading, MoneyGram rose 25% to $9.73. Prior to being halted, Western Union had gained 6.3% to $22.26.
12:56 EDTWUMoneyGram off highs as Western Union remains halted
Shares of MoneyGram (MGI) are off their highs after Western Union (WU) halted for news pending. MoneyGram did not halt its trading along with Western Union. The stock remains up 31% to $10.18 after Bloomberg last night reported that Western Union is in early talks to acquire the company. Analysts at JPMorgan told investors this morning that the potential merger talk is surprising since antitrust regulators objected to a combination between the two companies twenty years ago. The firm admitted that the competitive landscape has changed since then, however.
