Stocks on Wall Street were higher at midday after retail sales rose more than expected in May and first-time unemployment applications fell last week. The market, which suffered its first three day losing streak of 2013 with its lower close yesterday, is looking to avoid a fourth straight down day. ECONOMIC EVENTS: In the U.S., retail sales rose 0.6% in May, versus the expected increase of 0.4%. Initial jobless claims fell 12K to 334K in the week ended June 8, versus expectations for 346K claims. Business inventories rose 0.3% in April, matching expectations. In Asia, Japan's Nikkei stock index fell 6.25% last night as it continued its volatile trading and pullback from recent record highs... COMPANY NEWS: Shares of DuPont (DD) slid 1% after the company provided second quarter earnings per share guidance that was below analysts' expectations and said it now expects full-year earnings to be at the low end of its previous $3.85-$4.05 guidance... The Supreme Court unanimously ruled that human genes isolated from the body can't be patented, but also said that DNA molecules synthesized in a laboratory can be patent protected, sending shares of Myriad Genetics (MYGN) up 10%... Shares of cosmetics and fragrance giant Coty (COTY) slipped in their first day of trading on the New York Stock Exchange following their initial public offering. MAJOR MOVERS: Among the notable gainers were Belo (BLC) and Gannett (GCI), which both rose after the companies agreed to merge. Gannett agreed to buy Belo for $13.75 per share in cash, or approximately $1.5B, plus assume $715M in existing debt in a deal that the company sees adding to its non-GAAP earnings per share by approximately 50c within the first 12 months. Belo surged 27% after the announcement, while Gannett jumped 26%. Among the noteworthy losers was Elan (ELN), which fell nearly 3% after Royalty Pharma says one of Elan's shareholder proposals looks set to pass and that could force Royalty's takeover offer to be withdrawn next week. Also lower were shares of Williams (WMB), which dropped 1% after an explosion occurred within an olefins plant owned by the company. INDICES: Near noon, the Dow was up 50.42, or 0.34%, to 15,045.65; the Nasdaq was up 13.78, or 0.41%, to 3,414.21; and the S&P 500 was up 6.54, or 0.41%, to 1,619.06.

The company stated, "This morning, at approximately 8:37 a.m. Central Daylight Time, an explosion occurred within the Williams Geismar olefins plant. At the onset of the incident, Louisiana State Police, Ascension OEP and Iberville OEP were notified. Both Ascension and Iberville OEPs activated their emergency alert systems. We are currently focused on the safety and well-being of our employees, contractors and the local community who are responding to the situation. Emergency shut-down valves have been closed. The unit is isolated. Our emergency-response crews are thoroughly trained to respond to these types of incidents and are diligently performing their work with their first priority being the safety and well-being of people in and around the area. First responders are on the scene and local routes to the plant have been closed by the local authorities. We are in the process of accounting for all personnel. Injuries have been reported, the number and extent of those injuries is not known at this point."
