Visa announced the launch of a new plug-and-play mobile money platform that will make it easy and cost-efficient for financial institutions and mobile operators to offer mobile financial services to consumers. The new service can enable domestic-only or globally interoperable mobile money services.

NOTABLE: Amazon (AMZN) reported first quarter earnings that were in-line with expectations on revenues that topped estimates. The company also provided second quarter revenue outlook that was in-line with expectations and shares of the online retailer were roughly flat in after hours trade... Starbucks (SBUX) gained 1.6% after reporting profit that in-line with estimates on revenue that was a bit light. The company reaffirmed its fiscal 2014 revenue outlook and said it expects same-store sales growth for 2014 to be in the mid-single digits... Microsoft (MSFT) gained 2.8% after reporting earnings that beat expectations on revenues that were roughly in-line with estimates. The company added that it sold 1.2M Xbox One units during the quarter and said Windows volume licensing revenue grew 11%. UP AFTER EARNINGS: Baidu (BIDU), up 5.5%... Deckers Outdoor (DECK), up 6.3%... Synaptics (SYNA), up 7.8%. ALSO HIGHER: Clean Harbors (CLH), up 7% after Relational Investors reported a 9% stake in the company, adding that it has been in dialogue with the company's management regarding certain actions the fund believes Clean Harbors can take to enhance shareholder value... Under Armour (UA), up 2.5% after it was announced the company will join the S&P 500 as of the close on April 30. DOWN AFTER EARNINGS: Dow member Visa (V) fell 3.5% despite reporting earnings and revenue that topped estimates. The company said it expects earnings per share growth for its fiscal 2014 in the mid-to-high teens... Pandora (P), down 4% after its second quarter outlook disappointed. The streaming internet radio company did, however, raise its fiscal 2014 profit and sales outlooks... Cliffs Natural (CLF), down 4%.

14:15 EDTVEarnings Preview: Visa to report results amid mixed signs for credit cards
Visa (V) is scheduled to report second quarter earnings after the market close on Thursday, April 24, with a conference call scheduled for 5:00 pm ET. Visa is a credit card network. EXPECTATIONS: Analysts are looking for earnings per share of $2.18 on revenue of $3.19B, according to First Call. The consensus range for EPS is $2.12-$2.26 on revenue of $3.15B-$3.22B. LAST QUARTER: Visa reported higher than expected first quarter profits and revenue. The company reiterated its guidance for fiscal EPS growth in the mid to high teen percentage levels. It reported that its payments volume, on a constant dollar basis, had grown 11% year-over-year to $1.2 T. METRICS: The credit card metrics reported by the nation's largest banks for Q1 have mostly been positive. Wells Fargo (WFC) reported that its average credit card balance had risen to over $26,000 last quarter, up from over $24,000 in the same period a year earlier. The proportion of Wells' retail banking customers that utilized the bank's credit cards rose to 38%, versus 34% in the first quarter of 2013. And JPMorgan's (JPM) credit card volume rose 10% last quarter, versus the first quarter of 2013. On the other hand, revenue from Citigroup's (C) credit cards were roughly flat year-over-year. Credit metrics at the major banks that reported their Q1 results have generally improved. American Express (AXP) last week reported higher than expected Q1 EPS but lower than expected revenue. Discover (DFS) reported higher than expected Q1 EPs and revenue that was in-line with analysts' expectations. STREET RESEARCH: Janney Capital upgraded Visa to Buy from Hold in a note to investors on April 15. The stock's previous decline created an attractive entry point, as the company has one of the better business models in the payments sector, the firm contended. Visa's EPS can grow 15%-20%, the firm stated. Meanwhile, research firm Oppenheimer wrote on April 17 that Visa's fundamental environment remains stable, while the company's results should stay solid. The firm recommended that investors use the recent weakness in the stock to become more aggressive on the shares. Oppenheimer kept an Outperform rating on Visa. PRICE ACTION: Visa is up 25% in the last year, but it has only gained 3% in the last six months.

Oppenheimer believes that the fundamental environment for Visa (V) and MasterCard (MA) is "relatively stable." The firm expects the companies to reaffirm their full-year guidance, and recommends using the stocks' recent weakness to become more aggressive. The firm keeps Outperform ratings on both stocks.
