11:18 EDTVZCiena advances after seen as likely winner of Verizon deal
Shares of communications equipment provider Ciena (CIEN) are climbing after research firm Cowen wrote that the company is "highly likely" to win a key deal with Verizon (VZ). WHAT'S NEW: After speaking with sources in the telecom sector, Cowen analyst Paul Silverstein believes that Verizon will probably select Ciena to be one of two key suppliers of 100Gbps Metro optical systems for Verizon's upcoming metro optical build-out. The deal could generate $200M-$300M or more in revenue for Ciena during a two year period beginning in early 2016, the analyst estimated. The deal may increase Ciena's fiscal 2016 earnings per share by 5c-12c, added Silverstein, who kept a $32 price target and Outperform rating on Ciena's shares. WHAT'S NOTABLE: Ciena reported stronger than expected fourth quarter results on December 11 and provided a Q1 revenue guidance range whose midpoint was above the consensus outlook. PRICE ACTION: In mid-morning trading, Ciena rose 1.6% to $19.79.

09:06 EDTVZVerizon announces voluntary sale and purchase program for small shareowners
Verizon Communications announced a program to provide its small shareowners with a convenient and inexpensive way either to round their Verizon holdings up to 100 shares or to sell all their shares. Verizon will not buy or sell any of the shares or otherwise participate in the program. The program is voluntary. It is intended to help owners of fewer than 100 Verizon shares who may have been deterred from selling their Verizon shares or buying additional shares because of the inconvenience. Similar odd-lot programs are commonly offered periodically by public companies to reduce administrative costs and offer a service to investors. Verizon's program will be independently administered by Georgeson, a Computershare company.
