07:28 EDTUAL, AAMRQJudge rules UAL, AMR to face trial over 9/11 claims, Reuters reports
U.S. Judge Alvin Hellerstein ruled that AMR 's (AAMRQ) American Airlines and United Continental (UAL) have to face trial over claims relating to the September 11, 2001 attacks that destroyed the towers of the World Trade Center, according to court documents, reports Reuters. In July 2001, World Trade Center Properties LLC purchased 99-year leases to four World Trade Center buildings from the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey for about $2.8B. The suit against the airlines claims negligence. While the company claimed damages of $8.4B, the estimated cost of replacing the towers, the judge limited the value of the destroyed property to $2.805B, the price WTCP paid for the leases. A decade of restructuring in the U.S. airline industry has resulted in a sharp reduction in air service that is curtailing traveler choice and some local economies even as it improves the industry's health, an MIT study shows, reports the Wall Street Journal.
