Senator Chuck Schumer, a Democrat, called on the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the federal weather agency, to avoid calling Sandy a hurricane, The Hill reported yesterday afternoon. Labeling the storm a hurricane could raise the deductibles of people affected by the storm to $20,000, versus just $1,000 for a tropical storm, the publication quoted the senator as writing in a letter to the agency.
