12:31 EDTTSLATesla rallies after analyst starts coverage with $316 price target
Shares of Tesla (TSLA) are climbing after research firm Pacific Crest initiated coverage of the stock with a $316 price target and Outperform rating today. WHAT'S NEW: Investors are "dramatically underappreciating" Tesla's growth outlook, particularly heading into 2016, Pacific Crest analyst Brad Erickson wrote in a note to clients today. Investors are too worried about the company's ability to effectively carry out its plans over the next 12-18 months, added the analyst. Meanwhile, demand for Tesla's vehicles is unlikely to slow for at least several quarters and the auto maker can sell 35,000 cars this year, 60,000 next year, and 115,000 in 2016, Erickson forecast. Reservations for the company's upcoming Model X vehicle are "much higher" than they were for Tesla's Model S at equivalent points before its launch, the analyst stated. Tesla's outlook for sales of the Model X, which the company has said it expects to launch in the second quarter of 2015, is "nothing short of conservative," proclaimed Erickson. Additionally, investors will continue to pay a "rising premium" for Tesla's "leading-edge innovation," contended the analyst. WHAT'S NOTABLE: Tesla reported significantly stronger than expected second quarter results on July 31. PRICE ACTION: In early afternoon trading, Tesla advanced $9.50, or 4%, to $247.99.

06:41 EDTTSLAApple pushing for 2020 production of its electric car, Bloomberg says
Apple (AAPL) is pushing to begin production of its electric vehicle as soon as 2020, reports Bloomberg, citing people with knowledge of the matter. Bloomberg notes that the move could put Apple into direct competition with Tesla (TSLA) and General Motors (GM), both of which are targeting a 2017 release for next-generation electric vehicles. Apple may still cancel the project if it becomes unhappy with progress, the sources said, though its vehicle team is already 200-people strong. Reference Link
