10:19 EDTIDCC, UTHR, KNDI, SUPN, TSLA, CAMPOn The Fly: Early Wrap
The Dow and S&P were up from yesterday's record setting levels in early trade during this holiday shortened session after the durable goods report beat assumptions. Stock markets are set to close Tuesday at 1 pm ET for Christmas Eve and re-open Thursday. ECONOMIC EVENTS: In the U.S., the MBA mortgage market index sank 6.3% for the week ended December 20. Durable goods orders rose 3.5% last month, versus the expected increase of 2.0%. Excluding transportation items, orders increased 1.2%, versus the expected increase of 0.7% for the "core" goods. The FHFA home price index rose 0.5% to 207.2 in October, marking the 21st consecutive monthly increase for the index. New home sales fell 2.1% from the prior month in November to a 464K rate. However, the October's sales rate was revised up to 474K from an initial estimate of 444K. The Richmond Fed manufacturing survey for December came in at 13, versus expectations for a reading of 10. In Asia, China's central bank backed down from its most recent experiment with higher interest rates and provided new liquidity to money markets there. The People’s Bank of China reportedly sold about $4.8B worth of seven-day reverse repurchase agreements, according to Chinese financial news outlets. COMPANY NEWS: Shares of Tesla (TSLA) rose over 7% in early trading after the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reaffirmed the 5-star safety rating of the company's Model S electric car. Another electric vehicle maker, China's Kandi Technologies (KNDI), rose 8% after the company signed a joint venture ownership transfer pact with Geely and disclosed that it expects 2,800 electric cars to be delivered in its fourth quarter. MAJOR MOVERS: Among the notable gainers was Supernus Pharmaceuticals (SUPN), which rose 14% after announcing United Therapeutics (UTHR) will pay certain milestone fees and royalties associated with the commercialization of a treatment of pulmonary arterial hypertension. Also higher were shares of InterDigital (IDCC), as the stock advanced 5% after the company announced it has entered into a binding arbitration with Huawei to resolve their licensing dispute.
