12:52 EDTBBYBest Buy rebounds after analysts defend stock
Shares of Best Buy (BBY) are advancing after a number of analysts defended the stock in the wake of the weaker than expected guidance that the company provided yesterday. WHAT'S NEW: After Best Buy yesterday morning reported slightly lower than expected second quarter revenue and estimated that its same-store sales would rise by a weaker than expected low single digit percentage in the second half of 2014, Piper Jaffray analyst Peter Keith said the results were solid while the guidance looks conservative. Best Buy's consumer electronics sales rose for the first time in several years last quarter and its U.S. comparative sales numbers were "decent," while its online sales surged 22%, Keith noted. Best Buy's sales guidance looks conservative because the retailer should benefit from the launch of Apple's (AAPL) iPhone 6 next month, while its TV sales, which are rebounding, historically become a larger part of its total sales in Q3 and Q4, the analyst wrote. He reiterated a $34 price target and Overweight rating on the shares. Meanwhile, Deutsche Bank wrote that Best Buy is significantly cutting its costs, as the firm had predicted. It believes that the retailer can reduce its costs meaningfully going forward and it kept a $33 price target and Buy rating on the stock. PRICE ACTION: In early afternoon trading, Best Buy advanced $1.49, or 5%, to $31.29. Yesterday, the stock fell nearly 7% following the company's quarterly report, which was issued before the opening bell.

11:09 EDTRSH, BBYBest Buy shares decline as Best Buy reports Q2 sales drop
Shares of multi-channel Best Buy (BBY) are retreating after the firm reported that sales declines continued through the second quarter. WHAT'S NEW: Best Buy's Q2 earnings per share from continuing operations was 44c, exceeding analysts' consensus estimates of 31c. The company's Q2 revenue was $8.9B, which was slightly lower than analysts' $8.99B consensus. Same-store-sales for the quarter declined 2.7%, which is better than the overall industry sales decline of 2.5% as reported by NPD. Best Buy Chief Executive Officer Hubert Joly noted that traffic to the company's brick and mortar stores continued to decline as consumers research and buy online. Joly noted that in-store conversion and online traffic continued to increase during the quarter. Joly said that in the back half of the year, the retailer plans to intensify its investments in customer-facing initiatives. Chief Financial Officer and Chief Administrative Officer Sharon McCollam reiterated that industry-wide sales are continuing to decline in many of the consumer electronics cateogries in which it competes, and said the retailer is seeing "ongoing softness" in the mobile phone category ahead of new product launches. She forecast SSS down in the low single digits for both the third and fourth quarters and sees Q3 and Q4 operating income in line with the first half of the year. For the back half of the year, McCollam sees continued industry softness and higher promotionality in Canada and China. WHAT'S NOTABLE: During the company's conference call, Best Buy said that it is "encouraged" by the response to 4K televisions and aims to expand its holiday gift centers within stores. The company's CFO McCollam said that the firm's mobile phone category is "complicated to forecast." She feels that the disruption of carriers "could have impact" that the technology retailer did not anticipate. McCollam said that despite great excitement for some high-profile phone launches, there is still a great deal of competition in the lower-end of the phone market. In terms of the start of the upcoming quarter, Best Buy feels that the beginning has been "in-line" with expectations. ANALYST OPINION: ISI analyst Greg Melich feels that Best Buy's Q2 EPS beat was due to a slightly less dramatic decrease in gross margins and improved cost controls. He feels that the market is likely to pay close attention to continued sales decreases when predicting the rest of the year despite the better than anticipated quarterly EPS results. Melich said that he will keep an eye out for positive signs that Q4 will experience an improvement given the highly promotional and competitive landscape last year. The analyst keeps the stock with a neutral rating and a $31.99 price target. PRICE ACTION: In morning trading, Best Buy fell $1.59, or 4.97%, to $30.40. OTHERS TO WATCH: Best Buy peers include RadioShack (RSH) and hhgregg (HGG).

17:00 EDTSHLDOn The Fly: Closing Wrap
Stocks began the session in lackluster fashion as the averages opened just above yesterday’s close. There was little early reaction to the morning’s economic reports including the jobless claims data, Philadelphia Fed report, leading economic indicators, and natural gas storage change report. But by mid-day, the Dow had asserted itself as the day’s leader while the Nasdaq struggled to stain positive territory. As the afternoon progressed the Dow continued its advance, the Nasdaq hit 14-year highs, and the S&P also touched a new all-time high. ECONOMIC EVENTS: Jobless Claims data continues to trend lower, with the week of August 16 coming in at 298K vs. a consensus of 300K... The PMI Manufacturing Index Flash was strong at 58.0 for August, up 1.7 points from the July flash of 56.3. COMPANY NEWS: eBay (EBAY) rose almost 5% after a report said that a PayPal spin-off was under consideration... Hormel (HRL) gained almost 5% and hit a 52-week high after reporting better than expected earnings before the market opened... INDEXES: The Dow closed up 60.36, or 0.36%, to 17,039.49, the Nasdaq closed up 5.62, or 0.12%, to 4,532.10, and the S&P 500 closed up 5.86, or 0.29%%, to 1,992.37.

16:38 EDTJCPOn The Fly: Closing Wrap
Stocks on Wall Street began the session in positive territory despite some soft economic data points, including a weaker than expected report on manufacturing in the New York area and a lower than expected consumer confidence reading. The market short circuited following reports of a skirmish in the Ukraine where a Russian convoy was supposedly fired upon when it crossed the border. The averages quickly dropped and were only able to partially recover, as investors moved to the sidelines to avoid additional geopolitical risk over the weekend. ECONOMIC EVENTS: The NY Fed's Empire manufacturing survey had a reading of 14.69, versus expectations for a 20.0 reading. The Producer Price Index increased 0.1% overall, matching expectations. The core reading was up 0.2%, which was also in-line with the consensus forecast. Industrial production increased 0.4% in July, beating the consensus 0.2% growth forecast. That nudged up capacity utilization to 79.2%, versus 79.1% previously. The first University of Michigan consumer confidence reading for August fell 2.6 points to 79.2, versus expectations for it to have edged up to 82.0. Treasury international capital data showed foreigners dumped $153.5B in total U.S. assets in July after buying a revised $33.1B in June. COMPANY NEWS: Shares of Monster Beverage (MNST) surged $21.84, or 30.48%, to $93.49 after Coca-Cola (KO) bought a stake in the energy drink maker and the companies announced a long-term strategic partnership and asset swap. Coca-Cola will pay $2.15B for a 16.7% stake in Monster, the companies announced last night. Under the terms of their agreement, Coca-Cola will add two directors to Monster's board. Coke will transfer ownership of its worldwide energy business including brands like NOS, Full Throttle, Burn, Mother, Play and Power Play, and Relentless to Monster, in trade for which Monster will transfer its non-energy business to Coke. MAJOR MOVERS: Among the notable gainers was Achillion Pharmaceuticals (ACHN), which rose 81c, or 9.6%, to $9.25 after the company announced interim results from an ongoing Phase 2 proxy study of a potential chronic hepatitis C virus regimen that analysts at Piper Jaffray called "impressive." Also higher was Paylocity (PCTY), which advanced $2.17, or 9.79%, to $24.34 after reporting better than expected fourth quarter revenue and guiding to higher than expected sales in its first quarter. Among the noteworthy losers was retailer J.C. Penney (JCP), which fell 24c, or 2.46%, to $9.50 despite posting a narrower than expected loss for the second quarter. Also lower were shares of another department store owner, Dillard's (DDS), which dropped $9.49, or 8.21%, to $106.11 after reporting quarterly results that missed expectations. INDEXES: The Dow dropped 50.67, or 0.3%, to 16,662.91, the Nasdaq gained 11.92, or 0.27%, to 4,464.93, and the S&P 500 slipped 0.12, or 0.01%, to 1,955.06.

11:46 EDTJCPMacy's shares trading lower as Q2 results fall short of expectations
Shares of Macy's (M), a retailer that sells a range of merchandise, including apparel, accessories and home furnishings, are lower after the company's second earnings missed analysts' expectations. WHAT'S NEW: The company reported Q2 earnings per share 80c on revenue of $6.23B, falling short of analysts' estimates of 86c and $6.3B, respectively. Comparable sales were up 3.4% for the quarter and comparable sales together with comparable sales of departments licensed to third parties were up 4%. Chief Executive Officer Terry Lundgren noted that even with an improved sales trend in Q2, the company could not make up its sales shortfall from the first quarter. Looking ahead, Macy's reaffirmed its fiscal year 2014 EPS view of $4.40-$4.50 against estimates of $4.47, but cut its FY14 SSS view to 1.5%-2% from 2.5%-3%. Second half same store sales are expected to be up 2%-3%, and the company said expectations for the second half of the year are "on track." Lundgren said the company is approaching 2H with "confident optimism." WHAT'S NOTABLE: On the company's earnings conference call, Macy's Chief Financial Officer Karen Hoguet said the retail expects third quarter SSS to be lower than fourth quarter, adding that it "feels good" about the back half of the year. Macy's said that it sees fall season EPS, or the combined EPS for Q3 and Q4, of $3.04-$3.14 and expects total sales for the second half of the year to be about 30 basis points lower than comp growth. Macy's sees gross margins flat to down slightly for the year and fall season. ANALYST OPINION: This morning, UBS analysts said the Q2 miss could signal Macy's have been unable to generate incremental margin support from brands into increasingly promotional sales trends. Morgan Stanley analysts, meanwhile, believes the Q2 miss and the pullback in shares will be temporary and it presents a buying opportunity. The firm expects more margin misses over the next few weeks due to the promotional environment and remains convinced that Macy's key strategies are still in the early stages of delivering results. PRICE ACTION: In late-morning trading, shares of Macy's dropped $2.89, or 4.84%, to $56.88. OTHERS TO WATCH: J.C. Penney (JCP), which reports earnings tomorrow, is down 2.15%. Nordstrom (JWN), which also reports earnings tomorrow, is relatively flat.
