The USDA left its estimates for U.S. corn ending stocks unchanged, according to the latest monthly World Agricultural Supply and Demand Estimates report. The estimate for U.S. corn production for 2012/13 was left unchanged at 10.78B bushels, while the estimate for soybean production was left unchanged at 3.015B bushels. U.S. soybean supply and use projections for 2012/13 were unchanged this month as well, the report stated. The USDA did not that the potential impacts of U.S. budget cuts were not reflected in its latest report published today. Reference Link

Deere & Company announced it has reached a definitive agreement to sell its crop insurance business, subject to regulatory approval, to Farmers Mutual Hail Insurance Company of Iowa , headquartered in West Des Moines, Iowa. The action is a result of Deere's previously announced review of strategic options for the crop insurance business. The agreement will result in Deere selling both John Deere Insurance Company and John Deere Risk Protection, Inc., which together made up the crop insurance business unit of John Deere Financial. Closing is expected in the first quarter of the 2015 calendar year.

The Mosaic Company (MOS) announced that it has completed the previously announced acquisition of Archer Daniels Midland's (ADM) fertilizer distribution business in Brazil and Paraguay for $350M. The assets purchased include $150M in working capital. The acquisition is expected to significantly accelerate Mosaic's growth plans in Brazil as well as replace a substantial amount of planned internal investment in that country. Mosaic's distribution capacity in the region is expected to increase from approximately four million tonnes per year to 6M tonnes. As a result of the acquisition, Mosaic intends to manage and report a new international distribution segment beginning in the first quarter of 2015.

Mining giant BHP Billiton said it is focusing on potash as an area of strategic growth in China, with Mike Henry, a president for BHP saying potash "can be our fifth pillar, adding to the four key markets of iron ore, oil and natural gas, copper and coal that the company had identified previously, reported The Wall Street Journal. In November, Deere's U.S./Canada combines retail sales were down double digits, but less than the industry, which was down 50%.
