In a release dated January 3, 2013, The U.S. International Trade Commission has voted to institute an investigation of certain electronic devices, including certain wireless communication devices, tablet computers, media players, and televisions, and components thereof, and the respondents to the investigation include Samsung Electronics (SSNLF), Samsung Electronics America, and Samsung Telecommunications America. The products at issue in this investigation are various smartphones, along with base stations, 802.11-compliant televisions and Blu-Ray players, and tablet computers. Reference Link

Samsung Electronics (SSNLF) has unveiled Samsung Pay, a mobile payment service that will enable MasterCard (MA) cardholders to use their Samsung Galaxy S6 for everyday in-store purchases. The company added, "MasterCard built the foundation for secure digital transactions, so consumers can use their cards when, where and how they want. Samsung Pay delivers a seamless and secure mobile payment experience that will work at both contactless-enabled and most traditional point of sale terminals. For consumers and merchants alike, that means that every purchase made with a MasterCard using a Samsung Galaxy S6 will offer the enhanced security, benefits and guarantees of a digital MasterCard transaction including the latest tokenization technology. Owners of the new device will be able to use their MasterCard credit and debit cards from participating banks directly through Samsung Pay."

The European Patent Office reports that Samsung (SSNLF) was ranked first in number of European patent applications for 2014 with 2,541 applications filed. Philips (PHG) took second place with 2,317, Siemens (SIEGY) took third with 2,133, BASF (BASFY) took sixth with 1,530, Qualcomm (QCOM) took seventh with 1,459, Ericsson (ERIC) took ninth with 1,347, and Intel (INTC) took 10th with 1,054 applications filed.

Samsung will work to incorporate its recently-acquired LoopPay mobile payment technology directly into smartphone hardware, reports TechCrunch, citing statements by EVP and head of Samsung Mobile Injong Rhee. Rhee added that LoopPay is "compelling because of its coverage," as its technology allows it to work with roughly 90% of existing card payment terminals in U.S. stores. Samsung Innovation Center EVP David Eun noted the company will release new products incorporating the technology "in the near future" and hinted at the possibility of features like loyalty programs.
