11:25 EDTSPY, SPXS&P 500 continues narrow range trade, levels to watch
The index has broken down through its 10-day moving average, an indication of a technically weak condition. That break has not been a catalyst for selling however, with price "trapped" in a narrow range between the areas near 1865 and 1880. Sell pressure seems to abate as support at or below 1865 is tested, just as buying pressure evaporates around 1880 and slightly above. How this will resolve isn't clear as we have seen technical conditions ripe for a major sell-off develop, such as now, and then pass. Similarly, there appear to be few catalysts to push the underlying stocks higher, with trader interest siphoned off to hotter money names such as fuel cell shares and GSEs. It may be that earnings season, just a few weeks away, becomes the ultimate trigger one way or the other. Markets have been remarkably sanguine in the face of global unrest and uncertainty, though the situations in Venezuela and Crimea have yet to resolve. This weekend could be a watershed moment with the referendum and consequent action in Crimea. Below 1865, next support is at 1859.45. Resistance above 1880 is at the life high of 1883.57, and then on to 1890.

There is a band of support that was previously resistance at the 1988-1987 area. A break below 1987 would be bearish, voiding that support. If that breach happens, next support would be at 1981.57. Resistance is at 1996.74.
