15:34 EDTSPY, SPXS&P 500 head for highs of the session in last half-hour of trading
The index went on a wild ride today, testing down to its 10-day moving average at the lows of the session, and now sitting just below yesterday's highs. The catalyst for this sharp flip-flop was a mixed bag of economic news, combined with initial fears on the "fiscal cliff" problem dragging on through a stalemate in Congress. An expression of confidence that a deal could be in place before Christmas from President Obama helped to turn stocks positive. European shares also reversed off their lows to close mostly higher. At time of writing all sectors are now positive on the day. Leadership is coming from Consumer Discretionary and the Industrials. The laggard of the session remains Materials, which has under-performed so far in the last few days. At the current level of 1408.46, resistance is at 1409.16. Support is at 1397.68.

10:21 EDTSPX, SPYS&P 500 heads for key test of support, levels to watch
The index is heading for a key test of support near both its 200-day moving average and the midpoint of the double top pattern that has been in progress for the last several weeks. The midpoint of the technical pattern is at 1909.57, and the 200-day moving average is not far below at 1904.86. A break below the midpoint would suggest the doubletop has the potential to reach 1800. The break of the 200-day moving average would be further confirmation of the long-term trend change to bearish.
