18:06 EDTSPWRSunPower announces reorganization, sees $15M-$25M restructuring charge in Q4
SunPower disclosed in a regulatory filing that on November 14, SunPower announced a reorganization plan aimed towards realigning resources consistently with SunPower's global strategy and improving its overall operating efficiency and cost structure. In connection with this plan, which is expected to be completed by the end of fiscal 2015, SunPower expects approximately 85 to 115 employees to be affected, primarily in Europe, representing approximately 1% to 2% of SunPower's global workforce. SunPower expects to incur restructuring charges totaling approximately $15M to $25M, principally composed of severance benefits, lease and related termination costs, and other associated costs. A substantial portion of such charges are expected to be incurred in the Q4, and SunPower expects more than 90% of total charges to be cash. The actual timing and costs of the plan may differ from SunPower’s current expectations and estimates due to a number of factors, including uncertainties related to required consultations with employee representatives as well as other local labor law requirements and mandatory processes in the relevant jurisdictions.

15:21 EDTSPWRSunPower turns negative following SolarCity segment on FBN
Shares of SunPower (SPWR) briefly spiked in afternoon trading after Liz Claman of Fox Business News stated earlier on her Twitter feed: "The sun attracts billionaires! @SunPower has @WarrenBuffett investing, @solarcity has @elonmusk in." Claman appeared to have been referring to Buffett's prior investment in SunPower's 579-megawatt Solar Star development, not a new investment in its stock. The anchor spoke with SolarCity (SCTY) CEO Lyndon Rive on the network and none of the discussion focused on new events regarding Buffett or SunPower, which is now down 1% in afternoon trading near $27.24.

10:26 EDTSPWRSolar names retreat after First Solar results miss expectations
Shares of a number of solar companies are falling after one of the leading companies in the sector, First Solar (FSLR), announced weaker than expected results. WHAT'S NEW: First Solar reported Q3 earnings per share, excluding a one-time tax benefit, of 61c, compared with analysts' consensus estimate of 64c. The company reported Q3 revenue of $899M, versus the consensus outlook of about $1B. First Solar reiterated its fiscal 2014 EPS guidance of $2.40-$2.80, versus the consensus outlook of $2.61. However, the company trimmed its full-year sales guidance to $3.6B-$3.9B from $3.7B-$4B. The company added that it was on track to meet or exceed its bookings goal for the full year. Additionally, First Solar announced that its potential bookings opportunities had risen to 13.7 gigawatts, versus 12.7 gigawatts in Q2, due to continued growth in the U.S., Latin America and India. “Following the project delays experienced in the prior quarter, our third quarter earnings have improved, and we continue to make progress towards our financial targets for the year," said First Solar CEO Jim Hughes. First Solar is not prepared to pursue the launch of a YieldCo at this time, Hughes reported. YieldCos are subsidiaries of energy companies that own power plants and projects and typically trade on stock exchanges. WHAT'S NOTABLE: On October 20, JPMorgan wrote that the recent sell-off in solar stocks was unjustified, as Q3 results up to that time showed that the sector's fundamentals had changed little. The firm named First Solar as one of its favorite names in the sector. PRICE ACTION: In early trading, First Solar (FSLR) sank 11% to $50.15. Meanwhile, SunPower (SPWR) fell 2.5% to $29.57, Sunedison (SUNE) declined 1.6% to $18, Canadian Solar (CSIQ) lost 3% to $30, and JinkoSolar (JKS) gave back 2.7% to $22.74.
