09:02 EDTSTPSuntech subsidiary granted definitive moratorium
Suntech announced that Suntech Power International, the company's principal operating subsidiary in Europe, has been granted a definitive moratorium on creditor claims from the judicial authorities in Schaffhausen, Switzerland. The moratorium is for a six month period and may be extended thereafter. Previously, on April 9, SPI had been granted a provisional moratorium for two months on creditor claims as a result of over-indebtedness. The majority of SPI's debt is Suntech inter-company debt. Other than the insolvency and restructuring of Suntech Holdings' Chinese subsidiary Wuxi Suntech Power and the SPI composition proceedings, Suntech Holdings is not aware of any similar proceedings regarding any of its other entities.

10:40 EDTLDK, YGE, TSL, STPSolar stocks jump after China backs industry
Chinese solar energy stocks are jumping after the Chinese government ordered power producers and lenders to provide more support to the industry. WHAT'S NEW: China's government announced that electric grid companies should give priority to obtaining power from solar plants, Bloomberg reported on Saturday. Lenders must help Chinese solar companies raise money, the news service also quoted the government as saying. TODAY'S PRICE ACTION: In mid-morning trading, LDK Solar (LDK) rallied 9.5% to $1.50, Suntech Power (STP) jumped 7% to $1, Trina Solar (TSL) surged 7% to $6.35. Yingli Green jumped 10% to $3.18, and Jinko Solar (JKS) climbed 7% to $9.40. WHAT'S NOTABLE: The EU has imposed high tariffs on Chinese solar companies, as it has accused the companies of selling solar panels at artificially low prices. Some EU countries have said that the dispute with China should be resolved quickly.

13:09 EDTFSLR, STP, SPWR, JASO, YGE, CSIQ, TSL, LDKIHS still expects solar installations to grow by at least 10% this year
European photovoltaic installations are forecast to fall by more than 6 gigawatts, or GW, in 2013, with 1.3 GW of this decline attributed to incoming EU anti-dumping duties on Chinese modules according to a recently released analysis from IHS, the firm disclosed yesterday. Despite this dramatic fall, IHS still predicts global installations will grow at a double-digit rate to 35 GW in 2013 driven by a surge in demand in Asia. In its latest quarterly analysis on global photovoltaic installation demand, IHS cut has cut its forecast for the second half of 2013 in Europe by more than 1.3 GW, citing the anti-dumping tariffs that came into force on June 6. As a result of these duties, and several other factors, including changes to incentive systems, IHS predicts total European PV installations will fall to 11.6 GW in 2013, down 33 percent from 17.7 GW in 2012.Reference Link

08:43 EDTLDKLDK Solar took write-down of $15.1M for market price weakness
LDK Solar said earlier in its earnings release that during the preparation of its Q1 financial results, management determined that an inventory write-down of $15.1M was required as a result of a continuous weakness in market price for polysilicon, wafers, cells and modules caused by industry-wide over capacity and much heated market competition. As a result, gross margin and results from operations were negatively impacted in Q1. Gross margin for Q1 was negative 57.0%, compared to negative 71.4% in Q4, and negative 65.5% in the first quarter of fiscal 2012.

Stocks on Wall Street were higher at midday after S&P raised its outlook on the U.S. economy, Chinese data disappointed and Japanese stocks rallied. Stocks began the session higher but the averages turned mixed within minutes and passed back and forth across the flatline in the early minutes of the trading day. The averages made a definitive move higher about an hour into trading and have remained in positive territory since. ECONOMIC EVENTS: In the U.S., ratings agency Standard & Poor's upgraded its outlook for the U.S. economy to stable from negative, pointing to the strengthening economy and the dollar's status as the world's "key reserve currency" as contributors to its decision. In Asia, Chinese exports posted their lowest growth in almost a year in May, while inflation, growth in bank lending and investment came in below expectations. Also, factory output and retail sales grew at a pace that was similar to previous months. However, in Japan, the Nikkei index rallied nearly 5% after the nation's gross domestic product expanded by an annualized 4.1% in the first quarter, which was stronger than the prior 3.5% growth estimate. COMPANY NEWS: Apple (AAPL) advanced over 1% ahead of the start of its Worldwide Developers Conference, which kicks off with a keynote address from CEO Tim Cook scheduled for 1 pm ET. An updated mobile iOS, a new version of its desktop operating system and new MacBooks have all been rumored to debut, but the most discussed potential announcement is Apple’s "iRadio" Pandora (P) competitor. Pandora shares were down almost 3% as the event approached... Facebook (FB) shares rallied 5% after research analysts at Stifel and JPMorgan both issued positive notes to investors about the social network company. MAJOR MOVERS: Among the notable gainers was Canadian Solar (CSIQ), which rose 7% after announcing a $300M deal for solar power plant construction. Among the noteworthy losers were Dynavax (DVAX), which dropped 34% after reporting feedback from an FDA meeting regarding its investigational adult hepatitis B vaccine, and Titan International (TWI), which fell over 8% following downgrades by at least three firms. INDICES: Near noon, the Dow was up 25.89, or 0.17%, to 15,274.01; the Nasdaq was up 14.18, or 0.41%, to 3,483.40; and the S&P 500 was up 3.76, or 0.23%, to 1,647.14.

08:07 EDTTSLTrina Solar releases statement on preliminary determination of anti-dumping duty
"Trina Solar is disappointed with the European Commission's preliminary conclusion, as we disagree that we have dumped imports into the European market. The decision will negatively affect the European solar industry and is against the interests of the global solar market... We will continue to cooperate with the European Commission's investigation, and use evidence to defend our position that these duties are unwarranted and serve as an impediment to the broader adoption of solar energy as a sustainable energy source. We urge all parties involved to seek a mutually beneficial solution through consultation and negotiation. As a forward-thinking global company, we will continue to deploy options to most effectively serve all of our solar markets."

06:05 EDTYGEYingli Green comments on EC decision
Yingli Green commented on the imposition of preliminary anti-dumping duties by the European Commission targeting solar products originating in China as well as those shipped from China. As of June 6, Yingli Green Energy's products will be subject to a preliminary duty of 11.8% until August 5. From August 6 until the final ruling in December, the company's duty will be set at the level of 37.3%, which is the lowest rate among all Chinese photovoltaic manufacturers, unless there is a negotiated solution between China and the European Commission. Under the current European Commission decision, duties would have to be deposited not only on imports of solar products originating in China but also on imports of solar products originating in other countries but shipped from China. When the anti-dumping investigation was initiated, it was defined to target Chinese-origin solar products only. "We notice with regret that the European Commission insists on imposing preliminary anti-dumping duties on Chinese solar products despite massive opposition from EU member states," said Mr. Liansheng Miao, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Yingli Green Energy. "Punitive tariffs – no matter at what level – will inevitably lead to higher prices for solar products causing at least the stagnation of the solar industry in Europe. We therefore encourage the prompt resumption of talks between China and the European Commission." "Yingli Green Energy supports a market-based negotiated solution for this situation as proposed by several European leaders. A negotiated settlement will help to alleviate the current market uncertainty, ensuring European consumers' access to affordable green energy and at the same time sustaining local jobs," said Darren Thompson, Managing Director, Yingli Green Energy International AG.
