Stocks on Wall Street were lower in a day marked by light volume and consolidation after big gains in the prior two sessions. Stock futures traded near fair value throughout the premarket trading session, giving a little peek as to how the day’s action would play out. The futures action led to a quiet open for the broader market, which moved in narrow range for most of the day. The averages drifted without direction as investors let the market consolidate its gains from last week. Investors chose to get ready for the onslaught of earnings reports that are due out this week, along with the results of the Fed’s FOMC meeting and the monthly jobs data... ECONOMIC EVENTS: Domestically, the Dallas Fed manufacturing activity index dropped to -13.2 in July from 5.8 in the prior month... COMPANY NEWS: Shaw (SHAW) rose $14.80, or 55.45%, to $41.49 after agreeing to be acquired by Chicago Bridge & Iron (CBI) for $46 per share in cash and stock. Meanwhile, CB&I fell $5.76, or 14.15%, to $34.94 following the acquisition announcement... MAJOR MOVERS: Among the notable gainers were SuperValu (SVU), up 25c, or 12.56%, to $2.24, after naming a new CEO, and Green Dot (GDOT), up $1.13, or 12.47%, to $10.19, as it bounced back from the lows it hit last week and was upgraded to Buy at Sidoti, which cited its valuation. Noteworthy losers included Progenics Pharmaceuticals (PGNX), down $5.41, or 50.09%, to $5.39, after the FDA requested more information on its constipation drug being developed in partnership with Salix (SLXP), and Lufkin Industries (LUFK), down $12.68, or 21.37%, to $46.65, after the company cut its full year guidance, citing uncertainty in Argentina... INDICES: The Dow lost 2.65, or 0.02%, to 13,073.01; the Nasdaq fell 12.25, or 0.41%, to 2,945.84; and the S&P 500 dropped 0.67, or 0.05%, to 1,385.30. | |

Salix Pharmaceuticals announced the successful completion and outcome of two pivotal Phase 3 studies to evaluate the efficacy and safety of budesonide foam in the treatment of active mild to moderate ulcerative proctitis, UP, or ulcerative proctosigmoiditis, UPS. In each of the two pivotal Phase 3 studies, a statistically significant proportion of subjects treated with budesonide foam achieved clinical remission compared to subjects treated with placebo foam. The company said, “We are pleased with the outcome of our pivotal studies of budesonide foam in the treatment of UP and UPS...We believe foam formulations provide important advantages over enema formulations principally with respect to drug retention and patient acceptance. We are working to submit a New Drug Application for budesonide foam as a treatment for UP and UPS by the end of September 2013.
