12:29 EDTMUEarnings Preview: Several analysts positive on Micron ahead of Q4 report
Micron (MU) is expected to report fourth quarter earnings after the close on Thursday, September 25, with a conference call scheduled for 4:30 pm ET. Micron manufactures semiconductor devices, principally DRAM, NAND Flash and NOR Flash memory. EXPECTATIONS: Analysts are looking for earnings per share of 81c on revenue of $4.15B. The consensus range is 66c-$1.03 for EPS on revenue of $4.05B-$4.3B, according to First Call. LAST QUARTER: On June 23, Micron reported third quarter EPS of 79c, compared to the 70c consensus estimate of analysts. Micron's quarterly revenue of $3.98B beat expectations for $3.89B. Revenues for both DRAM and NAND Flash products were down slightly for the quarter compared to the prior quarter. The company’s overall consolidated gross margin of 34% for the third quarter was consistent with the second quarter, as mix-related decreases in average selling prices were essentially offset by corresponding decreases in manufacturing costs. STREET RESEARCH: On the day after its last report, Needham upgraded Micron to Strong Buy from Buy and raised its price target for the shares to $50 from $40. The firm said then that it expected NAND gross margins to improve in 2015 and recommended investors look past the company's Q4 margin guidance. On July 31, Goldman and Sterne Agee issued competing views on how comments from Samsung could impact Micron. On that day, Sterne Agee reported that Samsung said its DRAM bit growth in the second half of 2014 would be limited, while its 2015 bit growth will drop compared to this year. The firm saw the guidance as "a major positive" for Micron and SanDisk (SNDK) and kept Buy ratings on both. However, Goldman said Samsung's increased DRAM bit supply growth forecast was an incremental negative for Micron. Goldman continues to have a Neutral rating on shares of Micron. More recently, Sterne Agee said Micron's stock has lagged due to concerns about potentially weaker Q4 DRAM prices and worries about NAND seasonality. The firm thinks these concerns are misplaced and continues to view Micron as a beneficiary of industry consolidation over the long-term. The firm keeps a $40 price target and Buy rating on Micron. Wedbush said it expects Micron's Q4 results to beat consensus expectations and for the company to provide upbeat commentary. The firm thinks that investor sentiment towards the stock has stalled on concerns about unfavorable DRAM supply/demand dynamics in 2015. However, Wedbush remains bullish on memory market dynamics heading into 2015 and keeps a $37 price target and Outperform rating on the shares. UBS believes DRAM and NAND average selling price trends continue to be favorable for Micron in the near to medium term and that the company should report Q4 EPS and revenue that are in line with consensus or better. The firm maintains its Buy rating on Micron and raised its price target on the stock to $36 from $35 ahead of tonight's Q4 report. PRICE ACTION: Since the day after last quarter's report, shares of Micron have advanced about 1%. Ahead of tonight's report, Micron was down over 2% to $31.54 in afternoon trading.

08:34 EDTSCSCScansource completes acquisition of Imago Group
ScanSource closed its purchase of Imago Group. ScanSource announced the execution of a non-binding letter of intent to acquire Imago on August 21. With the closing, ScanSource has acquired Imago’s operations in the UK, France, and their recently acquired business in Germany. The acquisition of Imago represents the next step in ScanSource’s strategy to be the leading value-added distributor of video, voice and data solutions for resellers in Europe. ScanSource’s increased footprint will benefit resellers focused on collaboration solutions, by positioning them to support their end-user customers who need international deployments across Europe and the U.S. The acquisition is expected to be accretive to earnings per share and ROIC in the first year after closing, excluding one-time acquisition costs.

07:19 EDTEMCEMC's end game is a marriage with Cisco, says Macquarie
Macquarie views EMC's (EMC) merger talks with Hewlett-Packard (HPQ) as a "ploy" to bring Cisco (CSCO) to the bargaining table. The analyst is not surprised by reports that EMC's discussions with Hewlett-Packard stalled given the lack of synergies and views Cisco as a logical buyer due to strong synergies and defensive reasons. Macquarie said VMware (VMW) would make Cisco the leader in the growing Software Defined DataCenter market, allowing it to offer EMC a better deal than any other potential acquirer. Finally, the firm does not view the status-quo as a compelling option for EMC given the recent share strength, aggressive street estimates, and the upcoming retirement of Joe Tucci in February. Macquarie rates EMC a Neutral with a $32 price target, up from $28.
06:33 EDTEMCHP was primarily interested in EMC's VMware stake, Re/code reports
HP (HPQ) was interested in merging with EMC (EMC) primarily due to the latter company's 80% stake in VMware (VMW), according to Re/code, which cited unnamed sources. 12:50 EDTEMCEMC jumps after reports detail takeover talks
The shares of cloud application provider EMC (EMC) are rising in a down market after Wall Street Journal reported that the company had held talks about selling itself to HP (HPQ) and Dell. WHAT'S NEW: EMC held on-and-off merger talks with HP for almost a year, but those talks have ended, Wall Street Journal reported today. Dell also held talks with EMC about a takeover, the newspaper added. According to a CNBC’s David Faber, the takeover talks between HP and EMC went on for months, but the two sides couldn't agree on a price, as EMC wanted HP to pay a large premium to its stock price. Tiernan Ray of Barron's added today that the takeover talks between the companies could resume, citing a source. WHAT'S NOTABLE: The New York Post reported on September 11 that EMC was considering selling its 80% stake in cloud computing infrastructure provider VMware (VMW). UBS analyst Steven Milunovich responded to The Post's report by writing on the same day that EMC had become a potential takeover target itself. HP, Oracle (ORCL) and Cisco (CSCO) could buy EMC, the analyst wrote. PRICE ACTION: In early afternoon trading, EMC added 1% to $30, while VMware added 1% to $95.
12:26 EDTEMCEMC, HP merger talks could resume, Barron's reports
The merger talks between EMC (EMC) and HP (HPQ) could resume, Tiernan Ray of Barron's reports, citing a source. Cisco (CSCO) and Oracle (ORCL) are still considered possible buyers for EMC, the reporter noted. Reference Link
