Chinalco, China's top state-owned nonferrous metals company has confirmed that it is in talks with Rio Tinto (RTP) about potential joint ventures in Mongolia and Guinea, Reuters reports, according to the Oriental Morning Post. The newspaper quoted Chinalco vice-president Lu Youqing as saying the two companies were talking about jointly investing in and developing the Mongolian Oyu Tolgoi copper-gold project, led by Rio's partner Ivanhoe Mines. Rio Tinto (RTP) and Aluminum Corp. of China (ACH) have decided to press ahead with previously shelved plans to develop the Simandou iron ore project in Guinea, according to the Financial Times. The two sides are in advanced negotiations on developing Simandou. The revival of the deal shows that the two companies' relations have improved since Rio rejected a $19.5B proposed investment by the Chinese company last year, the newspaper said.
