Rovi Corporation (ROVI) announced that it has signed a new multi-year patent license agreement with Google (GOOG). The agreement, covering Google’s use of Rovi patented video discovery technologies worldwide, offers a broad license for Google’s product and services across Internet-based platforms and devices.

Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster says that following talks with industry contacts, he believes Apple (AAPL) has a small team working and exploring the augmented reality space. Munster believes augmented reality has the potential to "be as profound a technology platform as the smartphone today," but admits broader consumer adoption is likely 10 years away. He views Apple's involvement in the space as an indication the company is preparing for the next evolution of computing. Munster has an Overweight rating on Apple with a $160 price target. He describes augmented reality as the "overlay of digital information on the physical world," with Google (GOOG) Glass given as an example.

The license provides Sharp with access to Rovi’s entertainment discovery capabilities worldwide and Rovi’s G-Guide HTML in Japanese markets for its popular AQUOS brand. The new G-Guide HTML features advanced discovery capabilities such as rich metadata, search functionality, and a browser-based interface to help drive a robust consumer entertainment experience across Sharp TVs and DVRs. G-Guide HTML also boasts a sleek TV listing grid designed to showcase rich images including cast photos, as well as Rovi’s “six-degrees” discovery capability, to help consumers quickly find relevant content that interests them.
