Shares of open source software provider Red Hat (RHT) hit a new 52-week high after its third quarter results and fiscal 2013 guidance topped analysts’ consensus estimates. WHAT'S NEW: Last night, Red Hat reported Q3 adjusted EPS of 42c and revenue of $396.5M, beating consensus forecasts of 35c and $383.11M. The company’s Q4 and FY13 outlook topped consensus estimates as well, as Red Hat guided to Q4 EPS to 36c-38c and revenue to $397M-$400M and forecast FY13 EPS of $1.46-$1.48. Red Hat raised its FY13 revenue target to $1.531B-$1.534B from $1.51B-$1.52B, compared to analysts' expectation of $1.52B. ANALYST REACTON: This morning, analyst commentary was positive. Two firms, UBS and Wells Fargo, both upgraded Red Hat following its better than expected results and guidance. Another firm, Maxim, raised its price target on Red Hat to $60 from $55, citing strong billings acceleration. The firm reiterated a Buy rating on the stock. PRICE ACTION: In early trading, Red Hat rose $9.37, or 19.1%, to $58.37 on nearly twice its average daily trading volume. With today's move the stock is up about 10% since the start of the year. OTHERS TO WATCH: Other, larger companies that compete with Red Hat include Oracle (ORCL), Microsoft (MSFT), and VMware (VMW).
