05:52 EDTQCOM, SMIQualcomm, SMIC collaborate on 28nm wafer production in China
Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corporation, or SMIC (SMI) and Qualcomm (QCOM), have announced that SMIC and Qualcomm Technologies, a subsidiary of Qualcomm Incorporated, are working together in connection with 28nm process technology and wafer manufacturing services in China to manufacture Qualcomm Snapdragon processors. Qualcomm Technologies' Snapdragon processors are purpose built for mobile devices. SMIC is one of China's largest and most advanced semiconductor foundries, and Qualcomm Technologies is one of the world's largest fabless semiconductor vendors and a world leader in 3G, 4G and next-generation wireless technologies. This collaboration will help accelerate SMIC's 28nm process maturity and capacity, and will also make SMIC one of the first semiconductor foundries in China to offer production locally for some of Qualcomm Technologies' latest Snapdragon processors on 28nm node, both PolySiON and high-K dielectrics metal gate.

Qualcomm announced that it has entered into accelerated share repurchase agreements with two financial institutions to repurchase an aggregate of $5B of Qualcomm's common stock, with an initial delivery of approximately 57.7M shares. The final number of shares to be repurchased will be based on the volume-weighted average stock price of Qualcomm's common stock during the term of the transaction, less a discount and subject to adjustments pursuant to the terms and conditions of the ASR Agreements. The company is funding the accelerated share repurchase with proceeds from its recently completed $10B debt offering.

Antitrust regulators in the EU are asking Qualcomm's (QCOM) rivals about the company's business practices, Reuters reports, citing a document. Europe has been investigating Qualcomm for the last seven months over the way it licenses its products and its power over patents.
