16:20 EDTFSII, TSLA, LPSN, PG, IDIXOn The Fly: Closing Wrap
Stocks on Wall Street were mixed after the Fed took modest action but provided a downbeat forecast for U.S. growth. Stocks began the day in positive territory but the rise lasted only a short time. The market gave up its gains and sat near the flat line ahead of the announcement following the FOMC meeting. There was little else for investors to do but wait and hope for a positive statement from the Fed. When the Fed said it would expand "Operation Twist" through the end of the year but did not take other quantitative easing actions, the knee-jerk reaction was for the market to sell off. The sell off lasted only a short time before the averages recovered and retook the flat line. The market then drifted for the remainder of the session and ended nearly flat, despite the Fed lowering their projections for U.S. economic growth through 2014… ECONOMIC EVENTS: In the U.S., the Federal Open Market Committee left rates unchanged and extended "Operation Twist" by $267B through the end of the year. Regarding the economy, the Fed again said the economy expanded at a moderate pace, but said growth in employment has slowed and that household spending is rising at a "somewhat slower pace." The Fed lowered its growth forecast for this year and next and raised its forecast for the unemployment rate. In Europe, reports indicated that German Chancellor Angela Merkel said that bond purchases by the EU's bailout fund could be a possibility... COMPANY NEWS: Procter & Gamble (PG) shares weighed on the Dow, falling $1.82, or 2.93%, to $60.39, after the company lowered its earnings view again after cutting it in April. The company cited unfavorable foreign exchange rates and continued economic headwinds in the U.S. and Europe... MAJOR MOVERS: Among the notable gainers were Idenix (IDIX), up $1.34, or 14.30%, to $10.71, after announcing positive clinical data on studies of two development stage drugs, and Tesla Motors (TSLA), up $1.69, or 5.27%, to $33.78, after Goldman Sachs raised its price target on shares to $50 from $36. Among the noteworthy losers were FSI International (FSII), down 83c, or 18.69%, to 3.61, after announcing Q4 revenue guidance that was below consensus, and LivePerson (LPSN), down $1.46, or 7.75%, to $17.37, after being downgraded to Neutral from Buy at Janney Capital… INDICES: The Dow lost 12.94, or 0.10%, to 12,824.39; the Nasdaq rose 0.69, or 0.02%, to 2,930.45; and the S&P 500 dropped 2.29, or 0.17%, to 1,355.69.
