09:40 EDTPAY, MA, VMasterCard CEO sees migration to EMV card standard as 'necessary and critical'
MasterCard (MA) CEO Ajaypal Banga said that card security is what consumers "expect and deserve" and that a move to a new standard of EMV chip cards in the U.S. would make stealing data more difficult and would make the value of stolen data less valuable as well. Note that Visa (V) executives said on their earnings call yesterday that it is "very important" for U.S. industry to move toward new safeguards including EMV chips. Analysts have previously contended that a move to a chip card standard in the U.S. would be a positive for VeriFone (PAY), as terminals would need to be upgraded.
