| theflyonthewall.com: | CalSTRS to vote 5.3M shares against entire Wal-Mart board | | Jack Ehnes, CEO of CalSTRS, the California State Teachers’ Retirement System, made the following statement regarding CalSTRS’ intent to vote its 5.3M shares, worth $313.5M, at the upcoming shareholder meeting: "CalSTRS believes former and current Wal-Mart executives and board members breached their fiduciary responsibilities. They did so by failing to respond to indications of a pattern of unethical conduct in the company’s foreign operations. Beyond that, CalSTRS believes that in some cases, Wal-Mart leadership actively suppressed an internal investigation which would have brought these improper actions to light. Based on these allegations, which indicate a breakdown of corporate governance and lack of oversight that should have averted this situation, CalSTRS does not have confidence that the current board has the independence and leadership needed to address these difficult issues. CalSTRS will vote its more than five million investor shares against the entire board’s reelection at Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. annual meeting. We encourage our fellow shareholders to do the same." :theflyonthewall.com |

| theflyonthewall.com: | On The Fly: Closing Wrap | | Stocks on Wall Street were lower on the day. Stock futures traded around fair value for most of the pre-market trading session, leading to a relatively quiet open for the broader market. The nearly in line jobless claims data had little effect on the market. The averages dropped following worse than expected data on manufacturing from the Philly Fed and an unexpected decline in the leading economic indicators. The averages never really gained any upside momentum as the market’s losing streak continued for another day… ECONOMIC EVENTS: In the U.S., the number of people seeking unemployment benefits was unchanged last week at 370,000, versus expectations for a decline to 365,000. The leading economic indicators declined 0.1%, versus an expected increase of 0.1%. The Philly Fed survey had a reading of -5.8, versus expectations for a reading of +10.0. In Europe, worries about the health of Spain's banks resurfaced on a report that customers at Bankia had withdrawn more than EUR1B from their accounts in the past week. Meanwhile, Fitch ratings agency downgraded Greece deeper into junk territory... COMPANY NEWS: Wal-Mart (WMT) surged 4.21% higher after its earnings and revenue beat expectations and its forecast for next quarter was about in line with consensus at the mid-point... MAJOR MOVERS: Among the notable gainers were Ctrip.com International (CTRP), up $1.26, or 6.41%, to $20.91, after it posted a sharp rise in its Q1 revenue, and SunPower (SPWR), up 51c, or 10.04%, to $5.59, as Apple (AAPL) got approval for a major solar project in North Carolina and the U.S. set duties on Chinese solar imports... Noteworthy losers included Advance Auto Parts (AAP), down $13.93, or 16.97%, to $68.17, after its earnings missed estimates and the company said it sees 2012 same store sales growth in the low single digits, and MEMC Electronic Materials (WFR), down 47c, or 22.07%, to $1.66, following the resignation of its Chief Financial Officer... INDICES: The Dow lost $156.06, or 1.24%, to $12,442.49; the Nasdaq fell $60.35, or 2.10%, to $2,813.69; and the S&P 500 dropped $19.94, or 1.51%, to $1,304.86. :theflyonthewall.com |

| theflyonthewall.com: | Earnings Preview: Wal-Mart trading in narrow range ahead of Q1 earnings | | Wal-Mart (WMT) is expected to report Q1 earnings before the market open on Thursday, May 17 with a conference call scheduled for 7:00 am ET. Analysts are looking for EPS of $1.04 on revenue of $110.50B. The consensus range is $1.02-$1.08 for EPS, and $109.26B-$112.79B for revenue, according to First Call. After reporting disappointing Q4 earnings, it gave a forecast of Q1 EPS $1.01-$1.06 and said it was in a "great position" for FY13. At a conference in March, the company expects to see its FY13 EPS reach $4.72-$4.92 and a full-year sales growth of 5%-7%. Wal-Mart said it had been "very pleased" with its sales and growth so far in Q1 with continued momentum in February and March. In the past quarter, the company increased its annual dividend to $1.59 and announced goals to strengthen existing businesses in China, Brazil, and Canada. The positive news came to a halt, however, when the New York Times reported that the company not only paid bribes to officials in Mexico to obtain construction permits, but the executives also "hushed up" the allegations. Investors will listen to hear any update on the controversy and what other actions the company plans to enact. While Moodys said the probe has no immediate impact on Wal-Mart's ratings, the company was downgraded to Hold at Argus. :theflyonthewall.com |
