Seven year-old startup Workday filed for an IPO Thursday to become the latest entrant in a crowded field of publicly traded companies pushing cloud computing, Barron's reports. Founder David Duffield may be trying to remake what he built at Peoplesoft in the 1990s, and take the battle once again to Oracle (ORCL) and SAP (SAP). Oracle's Ellison clearly is taking Workday seriously -- having mentioned the company 6x on it's past two earnings conference calls. The threat is that customers will dump the old stuff in favor of workday's new Web-based apps. However, to date, the extent of the threat has been unclear. In the meantime, assuming that Workday's initial public offering goes well Duffield's next challenge will be to show that he can wring real profit out of the cloud. Reference Link |
