08:10 EDTNPSPNPS Pharmaceuticals presents data from STEPS study
NPS Pharmaceuticals reported data related to the seven patients who achieved complete independence from parenteral nutrition and/or intravenous fluids while on long-term Gattex therapy in STEPS 2, a 24-month, open-label study in adult short bowel syndrome. The data suggest that patients achieving independence from PN/IV tend to have colon in continuity and lower baseline PN/IV needs than typical patients studied, as all seven patients had baseline PN/IV requirements of less than 13 liters a week. A poster titled “Long-Term Therapy With Teduglutide: Characteristics of Patients With Intestinal Failure Associated With Short Bowel Syndrome Who Achieved Complete Independence From Parenteral Nutrition and/or Intravenous Fluid Support” was presented by lead study investigator Ken Fujioka, MD and colleagues at the American College of Gastroenterology Annual Scientific Meeting in Las Vegas. A New Drug Application for Gattex is being reviewed by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and the Prescription Drug User Fee Act date for completion of the review is December 30.

08:12 EDTNPSPNPS announces initial findings from PARADOX study
NPS Pharmaceuticals yesterday presented initial findings from PARADOX, which is believed to be the largest and most comprehensive collection of research to date analyzing the burden of illness for hypoparathyroidism. Findings from 374 patients in PARADOX, which NPS conducted in partnership with the Mayo Clinic and the Hypoparathyroidism Association, reveal that patients with hypoparathyroidism experience an average of 16 of the 38 physical, emotional and cognitive symptoms cited, some of which were reported for the first time in this landmark assessment. Ninety-nine percent of patients with this rare, complex endocrine disorder experience multiple symptoms despite taking medications, such as calcium and vitamin D. Further, 69% of patients with hypoparathyroidism experience serious comorbid conditions, including heart arrhythmias and kidney stones. The findings were presented at ENDO 2013.
