Each of the major equity indexes remains sharply lower and near their worst levels of the session. The averages opened slightly higher but quickly began sliding lower, a move that was exacerbated by weaker-than-expected manufacturing data. Market internals are decidedly negative, with declining stocks leading advancers by about 5:1, while down volume is leading up volume by nearly 9:1. Crude oil prices are down 1% and the price of gold is higher by 1.6%. The Dow is down 254 points, the S&P 500 is down 34 points, and the Nasdaq is down 102 points.
