10:21 EDTBernanke to tell Congress that QE remains beneficial
Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke will tell a Congressional committee that asset purchases remain beneficial in the current economic environment, according to a transcript of Bernanke's prepared remarks. The central bank's monetary policy, including asset purchases, "is providing important support to the recovery," Bernanke is slated to say. The Fed is closely monitoring the potential costs and risks of its highly accomodative policies, according to the chairman. But the central bank remains confident that it can tighten monetary policy when necessary, Bernanke is expected to say. Moreover, inflation is "subdued" and, while the Fed's loose monetary policies could create negative consequences brought on by increased risk taking, the central bank doesn't believe that those negative consequences outweigh the benefits of quantitative easing, the chairman is expected to add.
