09:30 EDTTreasury 10-year auction outlook: the auction is expected to go well
Treasury 10-year auction outlook: the auction is expected to go well after a strong 3-year sale yesterday. Global inflation dynamics, expectation of ECB QE, and beliefs the FOMC could delay rate hikes have knocked yields measurably lower since early October and are expected to keep a bullish bias intact near term. The wi has cheapened a bit to 1.925% after richening to 1.89% overnight as it was closing in on the intraday yield low of 1.85% from October 15. Even before the back-up, the rate was very attractive to overseas accounts where the German Bund equivalent trades at 0.46%, with the Gilt at 1.54%, and the JGB at 0.24% (note Germany's and Japan's 5-year notes both traded below 0% earlier). The 2s-10s spread has narrowed to 134 bps and is the lowest since December 2012. The big detriment to the auction could be the richening in the wi to 1.88% today, significantly below the 2.214% December award rate. In fact it would be the lowest since May 2013. However, indirect bidding should remain very supportive. There was a 53.8% takedown from that class of buyer in December, the highest since December 2011 (61.9%). The bid cover was a solid 2.97 (2.71 average).
09:25 EDTEuro$ interest rate options: a variety of flows
Euro$ interest rate options: a variety of flows included a 12k purchase of Green March 83/87 call spreads vs a sale of Short March 91/92 call spreads. Also spotted was a 4k sale of Front June 96/97 call spreads vs a purchase of 95 puts in a position liquidation. The underlying rate futures a very mildly bullish, though stocks will open higher, with the March 2015 contract flat at 99.7250, while the deferreds are 1-2 ticks higher. More dovish Fedspeak from is due Kocherlakota no doubt, but after the close.

08:35 EDTU.S. equities are on the rise
U.S. equities are on the rise recouping some lost ground from Monday after Alcoa kicked off corporate earnings season with a splashy rise in net income of 11 cents and 14% sales boost thanks to strong aluminum demand that it estimates will grow 7% globally, boosting its shares 2.5%. The Dow is up 75-points, S&P gained 7-points and NASDAQ rallied 18-points in pre-open trade, below earlier highs. But with NYMEX crude probing $44/bbl to test fresh near 6-year lows, stocks may be hard-pressed to sustain their recovery unless plunging input costs related to oil help pad earnings this quarter. With financials just on the horizon (Goldman, Wells, JPM) this week, oil may not be much of a factor for that sector. In Asia, Japan's Nikkei fell 0.64%, while the Shanghai Comp rose just 0.19% and the HK Hang Seng gained 0.79%. In Europe, the Euro Stoxx 50 is 1.3% firmer, while Athens is up 2.6%, after more dovish ECBspeak from Nowotny and Coeure. On tap in the U.S. are the 10-year auction and Treasury budget.
