16:23 EDTLack of spending cuts in deal angers GOP, endangers final passage, NYT says
House Republicans, including Representative Eric Cantor of Virginia, reacted with anger to a Senate-passed plan to avoid going over the fiscal cliff on Tuesday afternoon, with many Republican members protesting the lack of spending cuts in the Senate bill, says the New York Times. Reference Link

07:55 EDTEnergy Action: NYMEX crude slid to new six-plus year lows
Energy Action: NYMEX crude slid to new six-plus year lows of $38.69, after blowing through the $39.44 February 16, 2009 weekly low. On top of an oversupplied market, the demand side of the equation has been the latest driver, with fears that a China meltdown will drag the rest of the global economy under water. While it may be a bit of a stretch tight now, some in the market are targeting the 2008 low of $32.40 as a medium term goal. RBOB gasoline futures are near the bottom of their six-month range, trading at $1.51/gallon, and down from over $1.77 as little as two-weeks ago. Natural gas is near two-month lows of $2.65/M BTU, as inventories remain high for this time of the year.

05:50 EDTFX Action: The yen is the strongest currency on the day
FX Action: The yen is the strongest currency on the day so far, outperforming what seems to be the only other safe haven in town, the euro. USD-JPY breached July lows in making a low of 120.24, the lowest level seen since May-19. The pair is now nearly 1.5% down no the day, and off by over 3% over the last three trading days. EUR-JPY, meanwhile, has declined over 50 pips on the day despite marked euro outperformance elsewhere. The biggest underperformers today -- in what many commentators are already calling Black Monday -- include the South African rand, the rouble, which looks set to make a new record low, and the Malaysian ringgit. The commodity correlating dollar-bloc currencies are also underperforming. The AUD logged a six-year low versus the USD earlier, while the CAD is trading in 12-year low territory.
