09:10 EDTU.S. equities are back on the defensive
U.S. equities are back on the defensive after the uptick in jobless claims, though it is global shares leading the stock market lower after China's Shanghai Comp sank 6.7% after margin lending curbs spread, while the Euro Stoxx 50 is 0.6% lower on the usual Greek shenanigans. The Dow is 60-points lower, S&P sank 5-points and NASDAQ is off 6-points in pre-market trade. In M&A news, Singapore chipmaker Avago agreed to purchase Broadcom of the U.S. for $37 B, while Yahoo sank after a class action lawsuit on email spying. The WSJ reported that index and model-driven funds are pushing stock trading to the opening minutes and last half hour of trade just ahead of settlement, leaving midday liquidity suspect and trade costs double those of the wings. Up next is the April NAR pending home sales release, seen lower.

08:45 EDTThe 7k U.S. initial claims rise to 282k
The 7k U.S. initial claims rise to 282k in the fourth week of May extends the 11k bounce to 275k (was 274k) in the BLS survey, as claims continue to reverse the tightness in the prior three readings that started with a 262k cycle-low at the end of April. Claims are still tight versus pre-May levels however, and are displaying a cyclical downtrend that became obscured in early-April by a temporary spike around the Easter holiday period. Claims are averaging just 273k in May, following higher prior averages of 281k in April, 285k in March, 306k in February and 290k in January. The 275Xk BLS survey week reading undershot prior BLS figures of 296k in April, 293k in March, 285k in February, and 301k in January. Analysts expect a 215k May nonfarm payroll gain that sits close to the 223k April rise but that beats the lean 85k March increase and the 184k average rise in Q1. Payrolls face upside risk from tight claims and heightened consumer confidence in the face of lower gasoline prices, though downside risk from factory sentiment weakness and a lean ADP trajectory through the 169k April rise.

08:15 EDTU.S. Initial Jobless Claims Preview
U.S. Initial Jobless Claims Preview: Claims data for the week of May 23rd should reveal a headline rise of 6k to 280k (median 271k) following last week's increase to 274k from 264k in the week prior. Claims have struck a lean path in May and look poised to average 270k from 281k in April. This would support our forecast for headline employment of 215k for the month.
