08:55 EDTU.S. equities are slightly firmer to start the week
U.S. equities are slightly firmer to start the week after decent gains in Europe following the German Handelsblatt article that the majority of ECBers favor sovereign bond purchases. That helped lift the Euro Stoxx 50 over 0.9% higher, while stocks in Athens are 3.20% firmer. Yet, oil prices continue to retreat with NYMEX crude probing to fresh lows under $47 bbl, which could again weigh on the energy sector, while supporting the global economy (ex-oil producers) more broadly. Goldman lowered its target on WTI crude to $41/bbl from $70. The Dow is 22-points firm, S&P rose 2-points and NASDAQ is up 7-points in pre-market trade. Japan was closed for Coming of Age Day, but the Shanghai Comp plunged 1.7%. In corporate news, the pharma sector is hopping, with NPS surging 9% on a $46 offer from Shire, while Bristol-Myers Squibb shot 5.5% higher on better results for its Opdivo lung cancer drug than docetaxel. In retail, Express rallied 9% on better sales forecasts, along with Lululemon, while Tiffany sank 4.5% after cutting forecasts. Fedspeak is due from dove Lockhart midday.
08:35 EDTAtlanta Fed dove Lockhart will discuss monetary policy
Atlanta Fed dove Lockhart will discuss monetary policy at the Rotary Club of Atlanta from 12:40 ET. Lockhart is a voter in this rotation, who on Friday welcomed the jobs report, but said it was no reason to accelerate a hike, which he still sees around mid-year.
