15:15 EDTTreasury Closing Summary:
Treasury Closing Summary: The bond market embarked on the fourth quarter on Thursday still in the drivers' seat after stocks turned lower following mixed data, stimulus hopes overseas and oil prices swings with the updated path of Hurricane Joaquin. Jobless claims rose, as did construction and Markit PMI and vehicle sales, but ISM faltered closer to the 50 boom-bust line. The Atlanta Fed also slashed its GDPNow forecast in half to 0.9% for Q3 due to net exports. Bund yields also sank and the curve flattened somewhat cautiously in front of the September payrolls report.
14:40 EDTSF Fed dove Williams repeated his rate hike call
SF Fed dove Williams repeated his rate hike call for "sometime later this year" in his speech from Salt Lake City that otherwise closely matched one made from L.A. earlier in the week. The news shouldn't sway the markets much ahead of Friday's payrolls report unless he elaborates in Q&A later.

13:05 EDTFX Action: USD-JPY is off its lowest levels
FX Action: USD-JPY is off its lowest levels, trading at 119.70 after finding good support into the 119.50 level through much of the morning session. Wall Street is off fits lows, allowing for some recovery, though a band of offers, which have reportedly been lowered from 120.50 to 120.00 could cap gains going forward.
13:02 EDTWeek of 10/10 Jobless Claims to be released at 08:30
13:00 EDTAtlanta Fed's GDPNow forecast was halved to 0.9%
Atlanta Fed's GDPNow forecast was halved to 0.9% in Q3 from its previous estimate of 1.8% thanks to a reappraisal of net exports, well below Blue Chip median forecasts of 2.45%: "The GDPNow model nowcast for real GDP growth (seasonally adjusted annual rate) in the third quarter of 2015 is 0.9 percent on October 1, down from 1.8 percent on September 28. The model's nowcast for the contribution of net exports to third-quarter real GDP growth fell 0.7 percentage points to -0.9 percentage points on September 29 following the advance report on U.S. international trade in goods from the U.S. Census Bureau." For more detail, see the Atlanta Fed GDPNow website.
12:25 EDTU.S. equities rolled back over
U.S. equities rolled back over after a softer close in Europe with the Euro Stoxx stumbling 1% lower into the close and the German DAX over 1.5% lower. Biggest decliners in the DAX were Deutsche Telekom -4.8%, RWE -4.1% and Vonovia -3.1%. That put the fear of global weakness back on Wall Street. NASDAQ comp fell over 1.1%, while the Dow is down 1.1% and S&P 500 off 0.7%. Riskier geopolitics in Syria may be one factor, though oil prices have since retreated to $45 bbl with the more westward path of Hurricane Joaquin. A fairly diverse mix of companies in the Dow are the underperformers, including CAT -2.4%, Cisco -2.3% and Travelers -2.2%, in addition to the earlier retreat in tech via IBM -2.1% and Apple -1.9%. Treasury yields are re-probing lows and the dollar has lost some more traction.

11:55 EDTEnergy Action: NYMEX crude has fallen back
Energy Action: NYMEX crude has fallen back to $45.20 lows, after peaking at $47.08 earlier. The move comes as the National Hurricane center shifts the path of hurricane Joaquin further east, and presumably away from energy infrastructure on the northeastern coast. Gasoline futures have tumbled as well, down over 5 cents/gallon from session highs, currently at $1.36/gallon. Natural gas futures took another hit from strong storage build data, and is trading at five-month lows of $2.458/M BTU. A break of the April 27 base of $2.443 will take the contract into three-plus year low territory.
