Embraer delivered 20 jets to the commercial aviation market and 12 to the business aviation market during Q1, for a total of 32 aircraft. On March 31, the firm order backlog totaled $20.4B. During Q1, Embraer announced a firm order for 15 E175s and two E190s from KLM Cityhopper, KLM's regional subsidiary. The contract for the 17 E-Jets also includes an option for 17 additional E-Jets for KLM Cityhopper or Air France regional subsidiary HOP! The firm order has an estimated value of $764M based on Embraer's current list prices. The transaction could reach $1.5B if all options are exercised. Embraer and Republic Airways Holdings also signed an order for five new E175 jets in Q1 with an estimated value of $222M.

Northrop Grumman has signed a new U.S. Department of Defense mentor-protege agreement with the Missile Defense Agency mentor-protege program office in Huntsville. The DOD mentor-protege program encourages prime contractors to help small businesses increase their participation in federal subcontracts and establish long-term relationships with prime contractors. Under the 36-month agreement, Northrop Grumman will assist QTEC to enhance QTEC's engineering and technology capabilities, business infrastructure and business development. Key focus areas include information assurance and DOD certifications, cybersecurity operations, emerging security technologies and systems engineering.

The Department of Defense is enacting stricter rules on how defense companies can spent $4B of the department's research budget, following a report that explained that much of the budget was used to increase contractors' bids or to develop their own proprietary technology, reports the Wall Street Journal. Publicly traded companies in the space include BAE Systems (BAESY), Boeing (BA), General Dynamics (GD), Lockheed Martin (LMT), Northrop Grumman (NOC), Raytheon (RTN) and United Technologies (UTX).
