10:27 EDTNKEEarnings Preview: Analyst sees Nike reporting 'solid' Q2 results
Nike (NKE) is expected to report second quarter earnings after the bell on Thursday, December 19, with a conference call scheduled for 5:00 pm ET. Nike sells athletic footwear, apparel, equipment and accessories worldwide. EXPECTATIONS: Analysts are looking for earnings per share of 58c on revenue of $6.44B. The consensus range is 53c-63c for EPS and $6.24B-$6.61B for revenue, according to First Call. During its Q1 earnings conference call, Nike said it expects Q2 and FY14 revenue growing at a high single-digit rate. LAST QUARTER: The company reported Q1 EPS of 86c, beating the consensus expectation of 78c. Nike's revenue of $7B also topped the $6.96B consensus projection. Nike reported a Q1 gross margin of 44.9%, which was up 120 basis points. The company also reported worldwide futures orders were up 8%. NEWS: Nike recently announced a 14% increase to its quarterly dividend. The 24c quarterly dividend is payable on January 6, 2014, to shareholders of record at the close of business on December 16. At an October investor meeting, Nike forecast $30B in revenue by the end of FY15 and revenue of $36B by the end of FY17. Other FY17 growth targets highlighted at the meeting included: apparel to grow to $10B from $7.5B, women’s business to grow to $7B from $4B, and direct to consumer e-commerce business to grow to $2B from nearly $550M. STREET RESEARCH: Morgan Stanley expects Nike to report "solid" Q2 EPS of 59c and sales growth of 8.5%. The firm expects the report and futures growth to be a catalyst for shares. PRICE ACTION: In mid-morning trading, Nike shares were down about 0.6% to $77.99. Over the last three months, Nike has risen over 12%.

Nike is preparing to end production of wearable-hardware devices, and last week laid off most of its workers responsible for developing its FuelBand fitness tracker, Cnet reported Friday night. "As our Digital Sport priorities evolve, we expect to make changes within the team, and there will be a small number of layoffs," a Nike spokesman said, the website stated. Reference Link

The firm is positive on Nike based on expectations for overseas revenue acceleration, strong futures orders, valuation, lower cost of production in Vietnam and sportswear category growth. Price target raised to $84 from $80.
