16:55 EDTNFLXMarket ends week higher after ECB announces bond purchase plan
Stocks finished higher for the week after the European Central Bank unveiled a larger than expected bond buying plan and earnings season in the U.S. picked up steam. MACRO NEWS: The European Central Bank announced that it would buy EUR 60B of government and private bonds per month through September 2016. Reports before the ECB's official announcement had suggested that the central bank would buy EUR 50B of bonds per month... On a negative note, the International Monetary Fund cut its 2015 global growth outlook to 3.5% from 3.8%... U.S. economic data was mixed, as weekly jobless claims and sales of existing homes in December were worse than expected, but the index of leading economic indicators and new housing permits for December came in above the consensus outlook. COMPANY NEWS: Netflix (NFLX), Starbucks (SBUX), firearm maker Smith & Wesson (SWHC), and Southwest Airlines (LUV) were among the companies whose stocks rose following their results and guidance. On the other side of the ledger, Johnson & Johnson (JNJ), IT management solution provider CA Technologies (CA), UPS (UPS), and application delivery networking products maker F5 Networks (FFIV) were among the companies that fell after they reported their earnings or updated their financial outlooks... M&A reports moved a number of stocks this week. The Financial Post reported that Samsung (SSNLF) had hired investment bank Evercore (EVR) to evaluate a purchase of the troubled Canadian company. Samsung is still considering purchasing BlackBerry (BBRY), the newspaper added. However, Canada's BNN reported that Evercore said that Samsung has not been a recent client of theirs and that they prepare ideas "routinely" on their "own accord." Avon (AVP) has held talks about a potential sale to private equity firm TPG Capital, dealReporter stated. Bloomberg reported that online travel agency Orbitz Worldwide (OWW) is working with an adviser to contact potential buyers and has drawn interest from private-equity funds and other Internet companies... DreamWorks Animation (DWA) tumbled after announcing a new strategic plan that will see it cut its feature production from three films per year down to two and axe about 500 jobs. INDEXES: For the week, the Dow dipped 0.37% to 17,672.60, the Nasdaq rose 1.14% to 4,757.88, and the S&P gained 0.34% to 2,051.82.

As previously reported, BGC Financial analyst Colin Gillis upgraded Amazon.com to Buy from Hold ahead of the company's upcoming earnings report, citing expectations for the end of its Hachette dispute to improve North American media sales and profitability in the near-term and for the company's ecosystem building and advertising business to benefit it over the long-term. 12:24 EDTNFLXOn The Fly: Midday Wrap
Stocks on Wall Street were higher at midday, as details of a reported bond buying program planned by the ECB offset weakness in the Dow after IBM's (IBM) earnings report. ECONOMIC EVENTS: In the U.S., housing starts rose 4.4% in December to a 1.89M rate, versus expectations for an increase of 1.2%, while building permits fell 1.9% to a rate of 1.03M, versus expectations of an increase of 0.8%. The Bank of Canada lowered its target for the overnight rate by one-quarter of one percentage point to 0.75% in response to the recent sharp drop in oil prices, which it said will be negative for growth and underlying inflation in Canada. Reports indicated that a proposal from the European Central Bank’s executive board is calling for it to begin making bond purchases of about EUR 50B per month and continue that easing program for at least one year. In Asia, the Bank of Japan refrained from expanding its stimulus program, although it expanded and extended its loan programs aimed at boosting bank lending. Also, the BoJ cut next fiscal year's CPI forecast to 1.0% from the 1.7% it had projected three months ago. COMPANY NEWS: Last night, IBM reported better than expected Q4 earnings, though its revenue and FY15 profit outlook trailed estimates, sending the stock down over 3% this morning. Citigroup cut its price target for IBM shares to $170 from $180 after reducing its sales and earnings estimates following the tech giant's Q4 results. Citi reiterated a Neutral rating on IBM, saying it wants to see stability in fundamentals and free cash flow growth before getting more positive on the name. Meanwhile, Jefferies said IBM's cash flow guidance for 2015 is "very weak" and that the company has yet to reach a bottom. The firm continues to believe the risk/reward for shares is skewed negatively and it kept an Underperform on IBM with a $130 price target following the company's Q4 results... Netflix (NFLX) jumped 17% to trade near $409 per share after the company reported stronger than expected fourth quarter results and a number of research firms raised their price targets for the stock while pointing out the company's global subscriber growth had exceeded expectations. Bucking the trend, FBR Capital analyst Barton Crockett said Netflix's EPS would only have been in-line with the consensus outlook if non-operating items were excluded. He said he is less impressed with Netflix following its report and trimmed his price target on the stock to $400 from $425 while keeping a Neutral rating on the shares. MAJOR MOVERS: Among the notable gainers following their earnings reports were Northern Trust (NTRS), which rose 6%, and U.S. Bancorp (USB), which gained 3.5%. Among the noteworthy losers was Eldorado Gold (EGO), which dropped 19% after the company reported on its 2014 gold production, gave guidance on production in 2015, and its shares were downgraded at Credit Suisse, TD Securities and Canccord. Also lower was Acacia Research (ACTG), which fell more than 14% after a court granted a motion finding no infringement of certain method claims asserted by the company's Adaptix subsidiary against Apple(AAPL), Verizon (VZ), AT&T (T), and HTC. INDEXES: Near midday, the Dow was up 42.03, or 0.24%, to 17,557.26, the Nasdaq was up 27.36, or 0.59%, to 4,682.21, and the S&P 500 was up 12.25, or 0.61%, to 2,034.80.

14:17 EDTNFLXNetflix technical commentary ahead of earnings
The stock has been in a sideways consolidation pattern since a sharp downtrend began in October of last year. The approximate range has been a high at $350 and a low at $320. Breaks of either end of this range will be important determinants of the trend following earnings. A breakout above $350 would potentially reverse the current dominant downtrend. With over 8.5% of the trading float short, there could be substantial buy-to-cover pressure in the event of a positive surprise. Upside levels to watch above $350 would be at $357.95, $366.51, and $375.83. On an extreme positive surprise, the $380 area could be tested. If the news is negative, a break below the $320 area would likely lead to a resumption of the dominant downtrend. Support levels to watch would be at $310.25, $299.50, and $290.28. A breakdown below $300 would be long-term bearish for price, confirming a major top.

11:16 EDTNFLXCBS, Viacom climb following Stifel upgrades
Shares of CBS (CBS) and Viacom (VIA, VIAB) are climbing after research firm Stifel upgraded the stocks to Buy from Hold. CBS owns the CBS network and other entertainment properties. Viacom owns a number of cable networks, including MTV and Nickelodeon. WHAT'S NEW: CBS' NFL rights leave it well-positioned to charge cable companies and other TV providers high fees, Stifel analyst Benjamin Mogil wrote in a note to investors today. Meanwhile, the company's strong ratings and lower production costs reduce its risk, Mogil stated. CBS has more opportunities when it comes to selling its content to Internet TV networks such as Netflix (NFLX), Mogil believes. The analyst set a $65 price target on the shares. Meanwhile, Mogil believes that Viacom should benefit from the adoption of ratings measurements other than Nielsen's (NLSN) tools. Viacom has complained that Nielsen's tools have underestimated its ratings by failing to adequately take into account new types of content consumption, the analyst noted. Viacom's recent expansion into new international markets should also improve its performance, Mogil stated. He set an $89 price target on the shares. ANOTHER TO WATCH: Mogil initiated coverage of Twenty-First Century Fox (FOXA) with a $41 price target and Buy rating, saying that the company is well-positioned to benefit from its wide range of sports programming. He set a $41 price target on the shares. PRICE ACTION: In late morning trading, CBS advanced 2.75% to $55, Viacom gained 2.5% to $68, and Twenty-First Century Fox rose 0.4% to $34.72.

12:13 EDTAMZNAmazon's Twitch unit to allow users to stream music
In a blog post Amazon.com's Twitch unit said it will allow users to stream music on its online gaming platform. The company said: "Today we’re announcing two important music initiatives: the Twitch Music Library and the beta Music category. The Twitch Music Library, is a library of songs pre-cleared for Twitch broadcasters to use live and with VODs. As you may recall, we implemented an audio recognition system last year out of respect for copyright holders and to protect both our broadcasters and our brand. We knew it was equally important to ensure broadcasters had music options. Thus, the Twitch Music Library was born to offer safe passage through the less-than-clear legal landscape when it comes to audio rights. The Twitch Music Library features more than 500 songs provided by established and burgeoning labels, including Mad Decent, Dim Mak, Spinnin’ Records, OWSLA, Monstercat, Fool’s Gold, and many more. We are also announcing an experiment with music content creators: our beta Music category. The Music category—listed among the game titles you can designate for a broadcast—is for musicians to use for creating, performing, and presenting original music." Reference Link

Citi believes holiday data points look good for Amazon's Q4 results and that the retailer's gross margins will rise in 2015, reversing 2014's downward trend. The firm raised its price target for Amazon to $354 from $325 and thinks the stock has support around $300. Shares of the retailing giant closed yesterday down $5.52 to $291.41.
