08:29 EDTMVIS, SNEMicrovision continues rally after being designed into new Sony module
Sony (SNE) announced yesterday the development of a pico projector module equipped that uses laser beam scanning. "By combining this module with Wi-Fi components and a battery, it can realize a compact, pocket-sized projector which can be used to project images from products such as smartphones or tablets, focus-free and in even higher resolution, on any flat or curved surface such as a wall or desk," Sony said. The module is composed of a semiconductor laser, Micro Electro Mechanical Systems mirror, which incorporates the PicoP technology developed by MicroVision (MVIS), their respective drivers, and a video processor to control the video signal processing and image output, Sony added. After rallying 98% yesterday to $2.67, shares of Microvision are up another 15% to $3.06 in pre-market trading.

MicroVision announced it has received an $8M license fee payment from its Fortune Global 100 partner. The up-front license fee is part of a multi-year license agreement MicroVision announced earlier this month with its Fortune Global 100 partner for MicroVision PicoP display technology. The license agreement grants the Fortune Global 100 company a non-exclusive license to MicroVision PicoP display technology for use in display modules it manufactures and sells. In addition to the initial upfront license fee, MicroVision would also receive royalties for display modules sold by the Fortune Global 100 company. Further terms of the license agreement are confidential for competitive reasons.

Sony Mobile said its Q4 smartphone shipments increased 20.2% sequentially to 11.9M units, reports DigiTimes. According to Taiwan-based hanset component suppliers, Sony Mobile is expected ship over 8M smartphones in the first calendar quarter of 2015, allowing the vendor to reach its revised target of 39.2M units for FY14.
