17:09 EDTAAPL, MSFTOn The Fly: Closing Wrap
Stocks on Wall Street were mixed to begin the week, as the Dow managed to register mild gains but the Nasdaq was weighed down by slides in a number of so-called "momentum stocks" like Tesla (TSLA). Investors may remain cautious in the next two sessions ahead of the Fed's much anticipated rate decision and accompanying statement, which is due Wednesday. ECONOMIC EVENTS: In the U.S., New York Fed's Empire state survey for September rose to a five-year high of 27.54. Industrial production unexpectedly dipped 0.1% in August from a downwardly revised 0.2% July gain, missing the forecast for a rise of 0.3%. Capacity utilization dropped to 78.8% last month from 79.1% previously. In China, industrial output increased 6.9% in August versus the same period a year earlier, which was its weakest advance, excluding months that fell during New Year holidays, since December 2008. Chinese retail sales growth for August came in at 11.9%, missing the consensus estimate. COMPANY NEWS: Shares of Apple (AAPL) edged down 3c, or 0.03%, to $101.63 despite the company's announcement that a record 4M iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus pre-orders were placed in the first 24 hours that ordering was available. Demand for the new phones exceeds the initial pre-order supply, the company added, stating that delivery of "many" iPhone pre-orders have been pushed out to October... Microsoft (MSFT) slid 45c, or 0.97%, to $46.24 after the company confirmed an agreement to acquire Mojang, the developer for the "Minecraft" video game franchise, for $2.5B... MAJOR MOVERS: Among the notable gainers was Avanir Pharmaceuticals (AVNR), which surged $5.75, or 85.31%, to $12.49 and was upgraded to Buy from Hold at Jefferies after the company announced results from its phase II clinical trial evaluating the safety and efficacy of its treatment of agitation in patients with Alzheimer's disease. Also higher was SABMiller (SBMRY), which jumped $4.72, or 8.5%, to $60.26 after the Wall Street Journal said that ABInBev (BUD) was looking to obtain financing for an acquisition of the U.K.-based brewer and Heineken (HEINY) confirmed that it rebuffed SABMiller's approach regarding a potential transaction. The news of potential consolidation in the space also drove other beer makers highers, with Molson Coors (TAP) rising $4.20, or 5.85%, to $76.00 and Boston Beer (SAM) gaining 71c, or 0.33%, to $218.47. Among the noteworthy losers was Tesla (TSLA), which dropped $25.34, or 9.08%, to $253.86 after Morgan Stanley analyst Adam Jones wrote that he agrees with the assertion of Tesla's CEO Elon Musk that the company's stock may have gotten ahead of itself. Also lower were shares of NPS Pharmaceuticals (NPSP), which fell $5.42, or 16.56%, to $27.28 after Oppennheimer and Jefferies stated that approval of its Natpara drug for hypoparathyroidism could be delayed after concerns were raised during an FDA panel meeting, even though the advisors were in favor of approving the drug. INDEXES: The Dow rose 43.63, or 0.26%, to 17,031.14, the Nasdaq dropped 48.70, or 1.07%, to 4,518.90, and the S&P 500 declined 1.41, or 0.07%, to 1,984.13.

11:45 EDTMSFTMicrosoft slips after confirming purchase of Minecraft maker
Shares of software giant Microsoft (MSFT) are lower after the company reached an agreement to acquire Mojang, the developer for the "Minecraft" video game franchise. WHAT'S NEW: Microsoft announced this morning that it agreed to acquire Mojang for $2.5B. The company expects the acquisition to be break-even in FY15 on a GAAP basis. The acquisition is expected to close in late 2014. Microsoft plans to continue to make "Minecraft" available across all the platforms on which it is available today, which include its own Xbox platform, as well as on PCs, iOS, Android, and Sony's (SNE) PlayStation. "Minecraft" has had more than 100M downloads on PC alone since its launch in 2009, the company stated. WHAT'S NOTABLE: The announcement confirms a Wall Street Journal report from September 9 that said Microsoft was nearing a deal to buy the game maker for more than $2B. The report noted a Mojang acquisition would be the first multi-billion dollar acquisition by CEO Satya Nadella and it may be an unexpected push after Nadella had signaled a focus on its enterprise business rather than its consumer ones. Ahead of the acquisition, Reuters reported on September 13 that the impending purchase is aimed at pulling users onto Microsoft's Windows Phone platform. In the report, Tap Lab CEO Dave Bisceglia said, "If Microsoft could on Windows phones give players a unique and compelling experience that you can't get on the other platforms, that could be a driver to sell devices to existing Minecraft fans.” ANALYST OPINION: The Reuters report also cited Nomura analyst Rick Sherlund, who said "We don't view this acquisition as a signal of Microsoft's intent to double down on Xbox but consider it an attempt to better address mobile on a cross-platform basis." Also commenting on Microsoft this morning was Morgan Stanley, which expects the company to have a durable 12%-14% total return profile from full-year 2015 to full-year 2017. The firm increased its price target on the stock to $51 from $43, but with Microsoft trading at a 13% premium to the S&P, Morgan Stanley said investors should wait for better entry points before getting more aggressive in buying the shares. The firm added that Microsoft's solid enterprise business, stabilizing consumer business, and a shift towards more attractive cloud assets puts its on a more solid footing than it has ever seen, pointing towards sustained EPS growth. PRICE ACTION : In late-morning trading, Microsoft fell $0.42, or 0.9%, to $46.28.

05:53 EDTGOOGGoogle unlikely to buy stake in eBay, says Piper Jaffray
Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster says press reports that Google (GOOG) is in talks to purchase a stake in eBay (EBAY) are "largely unsubstantiated" and that the tech giant is unlikely to purchase part of the online marketplace. Munster notes that Google has only a limited history in taking stakes in public companies. He believes Google's general philosophy emphasizes full ownership in key assets as opposed to taking stakes in companies. Munster thinks a more attractive deal could be Google making a full acquisition of eBay's PayPal unit. He notes, however, that eBay has resisted activist investors who have proposed spinning off PayPal. Munster keeps a Neutral rating on eBay shares with a $55 price target. Shares of eBay rallied $1.51 to $52.19 on Friday amid speculation that Google was in talks to take a stake in the company.

12:51 EDTGOOGOn The Fly: Midday Wrap
Stocks on Wall Street opened in negative territory and have remained there throughout the morning. The market is on the verge of ending the week lower, which would be its first weekly loss in the last seven. ECONOMIC EVENTS: In the U.S., sales at retailers climbed 0.6% in August, matching expectations but also representing the fastest pace in four months. Retail sales growth for July was also revised upward to 0.3% from a prior estimate of having been flat. Import prices dropped 0.9% in August, while export prices slipped 0.5%. 13:03 EDTAAPLOn The Fly: Midday Wrap
Stocks on Wall Street were higher at midday, with the Nasdaq comfortably the leader among the major averages. The market opened relatively quietly as investors digested the bevy of research reports surrounding apple (AAPL) and the companies effected by its new products and services announced yesterday. The averages crossed into negative ground early in trading, made it back to positive territory just before the lunch hour, and now are all in the black. ECONOMIC EVENTS: In the U.S., wholesale inventories rose 0.1% in July, which was below expectations for an increase of 0.5%. Wholesale sales rose 0.7%, which was above the 0.6% increase that was forecast. COMPANY NEWS: The strength in the Nasdaq was largely attributable to Apple, which rose about 2.5% the day after unveiling two new, larger iPhone 6 models, the Apple Watch and a new payment system, named Apple Pay... Dollar General (DG) "went hostile" in its pursuit of peer Family Dollar (FDO), commencing a tender offer to acquire all of the company's outstanding shares for $80.00 per share in cash. Family Dollar confirmed the unsolicited offer, noting that the terms are the same as those in the previously rejected proposal made by Dollar General on September 2. Family Dollar said its board will review and consider Dollar General’s tender offer, but added that the board has not changed its recommendation in support of the company's merger with Dollar Tree (DLTR). MAJOR MOVERS: Among the notable gainers was NPS Pharmaceuticals (NPSP), which rose 21% after several analysts said FDA briefing documents for an advisory panel meeting on its Natpara drug were more favorable than expected. Also higher was clothing and accessories retailer Land's End (LE), which gained nearly 17% after the company's second quarter results beat the estimate of the only analyst that covers it. Among the noteworthy losers was eBay (EBAY), which fell for a second straight day after Apple announced its new mobile payment system, Apple Pay, that could come in direct competition with eBay's PayPal service. Shares of PayPal's parent were downgraded to Neutral this morning at Piper Jaffray and fell 3% near noon. Also lower following yesterday's presentation by Apple was partner GT Advanced (GTAT), which was downgraded at Goldman, Piper Jaffray and Dougherty and dropped more than 14% after it was revealed that sapphire will be used in the display cover of Apple Watch but not the iPhone 6. INDEXES: Near midday, the Dow was up 16.02, or 0.09%, to 17,029.89, the Nasdaq was up 21.10, or 0.46%, to 4,573.38, and the S&P 500 was up 2.62, or 0.13%, to 1,991.06.

11:59 EDTAAPLeBay downgraded, continues slide after Apple Pay announced
Shares of e-commerce company eBay (EBAY) are falling for a second straight day after Apple (AAPL) announced its new mobile payment system, Apple Pay, at its event yesterday. WHAT'S NOTABLE: Apple unveiled and confirmed its widely anticipated mobile payment system, dubbed Apple Pay, at its event yesterday. The service, which works with both of Apple's latest iPhone 6s and its Apple Watch, could come in direct competition with eBay's PayPal. Apple is collaborating with American Express (AXP), MasterCard (MA) and Visa (V) on the platform, as well as banks including Bank of America (BAC), Capital One Bank (COF), Chase (JPM), Citi (C) and Wells Fargo (WFC). Some retailers that will support Apple Pay include Bloomingdale's, Disney (DIS), Macy’s (M), McDonald’s (MCD), Panera (PNRA), Staples (SPLS), Subway, Walgreens (WAG) and Whole Foods Market (WFM). ANALYST REACTION: Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster downgraded eBay to Neutral from Overweight following the details regarding Apple Pay. He believes that Apple's new payment system is likely to disturb the mobile payments market and is certain that the "unknown competitive threat" of Apple Pay will further burden eBay's multiple throughout the next six months. Munster said that he expected Apple to announce an initiative like this, so news of Apple Pay does not surprise him. He noted, however, that he did not expect Visa, MasterCard and American Express to collaborate with the platform along with partners such as Macy's and McDonald's. Munster anticipates investors in the near term to be more "conservative" in regards to the PayPal multiple. The analyst lowered his price target for eBay to $55 from $63. Pacific Crest analyst Josh Beck feels that Apple Pay could negatively impact sentiment towards eBay's longer-term opportunity. The tech giant is gaining more traction in the e-commerce space than Beck had initially thought, which could ultimately mean an increased rivalry with eBay's PayPal. The analyst keeps a Sector Perform rating on eBay. Bernstein analyst Carlos Kirjner said that eBay's weakness on Apple's latest news is a buying opportunity for investors. He said that the tech giant's new payment platform is targeting offline payments, noting that offline payments are not imbedded in analyst's estimates for eBay's PayPal. He said that it would take at least a few years for Apple Pay to reach a 12% market share of online payments. He does not see this news as an obstacle for PayPal and Kirjner keeps a $62 price target and Outperform rating on eBay. PRICE ACTION: Near noon, eBay fell $1.64, or 3%, to $51.09, while Apple rose $1.64, or 1.7% to $99.63.

10:19 EDTAAPLOn Track, USA Technologies rise after Apple Pay seen as positive
Shares of On Track Innovations (OTIV) and USA Technologies (USAT) are moving higher after research firm Northland Capital predicted that both companies would benefit from the launch of Apple's (AAPL) mobile payment system which is based on NFC technology. On Track Innovations sells contactless/NFC readers, while USA Technologies provides products that facilitate electronic payment transactions. WHAT'S NEW: In a note to investors today, Northland Capital analyst Michael Latimore wrote that his discussions with vending operators indicate that Apple Pay will likely provide a major impetus to upgrade payment terminals, benefiting On Track Innovations and USA Technologies. On Track Innovations has gained share in the contactless/NFC reader market and now sells these readers to most of the vending operators in the U.S., Latimore stated. Accelerated adoption of contactless/NFC technology will help increase the number of contactless/NFC readers that are sold, the analyst believes. Meanwhile, US Technologies' cloud services revenue could accelerate as more vending operators deploy NFC readers, Latimore added. The analyst kept Outperform ratings on both stocks. PRICE ACTION: In early trading, On Track Innovations soared 42% to $4.70, while USA Technologies advanced 7% to $2.20. VeriFone (PAY), which sells point of sale electronic payment devices, gained 4% to $36.

12:10 EDTAAPLOn The Fly: Midday Wrap
Stocks on Wall Street were lower at midday after opening in the red and trading in a narrow range throughout the morning. The domestic economic calendar only had two reports of consequence, and neither was particularly market moving. All eyes are on Cupertino, California, where Apple (AAPL) will shortly begin its much-anticipated product launch event. ECONOMIC EVENTS: In the U.S., the NFIB small business optimism survey for August came in at 96.1, which was above the expected 96.0 reading. The Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey, or JOLTS report, showed job openings slipped 2K to about 4.67M in July. COMPANY NEWS: Shares of Apple were up 1% near noon ahead of the tech giant's latest product launch event, which is scheduled to begin at 1 pm ET. Expectations are for the company to introduce the iPhone 6, which has widely been speculated to be bigger than past members of the line-up and may come in 4.7 inch and 5.5 inch sizes. The company is also expected to unveil a wearable device, likely a smartwatch, and a mobile payment system integrated with both... Shares of fast food giant McDonald’s (MCD) slid 1% after reporting its comparable sales were down 3.7% worldwide in August and that its China supplier issue will negatively impact its Q3 EPS by 15c-20c. MAJOR MOVERS: Among the notable gainers was Annies (BNNY), which surged 38% after prepared foods giant General Mills (GIS) last night said that it had agreed to buy the mac and cheese maker for $820M, or $46 per share in cash. Shares of a number of other natural food makers climbed after the deal, as WhiteWave (WWAV) rose nearly 3% and Boulder Brands (BDBD) jumped over 8%. Following the deal announcement, shares of General Mills slipped about 0.5%. Among the noteworthy losers was Leidos (LDOS), which dropped 15% after the company reported lower than expected second quarter earnings and cuts its EPS view for the fiscal year. Also lower was MaxLinear (MXL), which fell 15% after the company said several of its cable and satellite customers have requested push-outs of shipments, resulting in the company lowering its Q3 revenue outlook and Needham downgrading the stock to Buy from Strong Buy. INDEXES: Near midday, the Dow was down 69.02, or 0.4%, to 17,042.40, the Nasdaq was down 14.93, or 0.33%, to 4,577.35, and the S&P 500 was down 6.74, or 0.34%, to 1,994.80.

The shares are down less than a percent to $98.20 ahead of Tuesday's expected product announcements. At that price the shares are below the 30-week moving average, but above the 50-week moving average at $96.92. So far there appears little in the way of significant technical damage in spite of recent concerns from the sell-side community. A breakdown tomorrow below the 50-day moving average following the announcements would be cause for greater concern. A move below $95 would break the intermediate-term uptrend on a technical basis. Conversely a move back above the $101 area, near the 10-day moving average, would signal an all-clear on a technical basis for higher prices. The life high for the shares is at $103.74.

Shares of Akamai (AKAM) are advancing after UBS began coverage of the stock with a positive view, calling the company "the Google of Internet Infrastructure." Akamai provides infrastructure for delivering content over the Internet. WHAT'S NEW: UBS analyst Steven Milunovich initiated coverage of Akamai with a Buy rating in a note to investors today. Like Google (GOOG), Akamai relies on sophisticated algorithms, the analyst stated. Increased demand for Internet media delivery could cause the Internet content delivery sector to perform better than expected, Milunovich believes. Akamai's strong reliability is difficult to match, which should enable it to fend off competition in the space, according to the analyst. Moreover, Milunovich is upbeat on the company's new security and cloud initiatives. He set a $70 price target on the shares. OTHERS TO WATCH: Other companies in the Internet content delivery space include Limelight Networks (LLNW) and Level 3 (LVLT). PRICE ACTION: In mid-morning trading, Akamai rose nearly 1% to $60.91.

16:20 EDTAAPLOn The Fly: Closing Wrap
Stocks on Wall Street began the session in positive territory after Russian President Vladimir Putin said he had an outline for a cease-fire plan for eastern Ukraine and was closing in an agreement. The averages hit their highs shortly after the open and the Nasdaq was the first index to cross into negative territory as it was weighed down by Apple's (AAPL) decline. The market moved in a narrow range as investors anticipated the Fed’s Beige Book report, scheduled for release mid-afternoon. The report was fairly benign and the market limped into the close, with volume remaining light. ECONOMIC EVENTS: U.S. factory orders rose 10.5% in July, which was a bit below the forecast for 11.0% growth. The Fed's Beige Book stated that the pace of growth did not change significantly in any of the central bank's 12 regions during a six week period ended in August compared with the previous six week period. COMPANY NEWS: Shares of Apple retreated $4.36, or 4.22%, to $98.94 after research firm Pacific Crest advised investors to take some profits in the stock. Analyst Andy Hargreaves forecast the percentage of new iPhone users who buy the next version of the device beyond the iPhone 6 is likely to decline versus prior cycles. The stock likely has only limited room to increase, according to Hargreaves, who said he would probably downgrade Apple unless new products that can generate billions of dollars in new operating profit are launched at its September 9 event. MAJOR MOVERS: Among the notable gainers was Infinity Pharmaceuticals (INFI), which surged $4.81, or 44.05%, to $15.73 after the company announced a cancer drug collaboration with AbbVie (ABBV) and a master clinical supply agreement with Roche (RHHBY). Also higher was Mobileye (MBLY), which jumped $3.94, or 9.16%, to $46.97 ahead of its second quarter earnings report, which is due tomorrow morning. Among the noteworthy losers was Repros Therapeutics (RPRX), which fell $4.11, or 18.55%, to $18.05 after FDA briefing documents ahead of a panel on T-normalizing therapies prompted Piper Jaffray to downgrade the stock to Neutral from Overweight. Also lower after its earnings report was apparel company Vince Holding (VNCE), which fell $4.47, or 11.54%, to $34.27. Analysts at Piper Jaffray attributed the post-earnings weakness to investor concerns over heightened inventory levels, but the firm said it still sees Vince as one of the best small cap growth names in its space and would be "aggressive buyers" on the weakness. INDEXES: The Dow edged up 10.72, or 0.06%, to 17,078.28, the Nasdaq fell 25.62, or 0.56%, to 4,572.56, and the S&P 500 slipped 1.56, or 0.08%, to 2,000.72.

12:33 EDTAAPLOn The Fly: Midday Wrap
Stocks on Wall Street were higher to begin the day, as reports spurred optimism that a ceasefire agreement between Russia and the Ukraine may soon be reached. The move was short lived, as the averages turned mixed during the second hour of trading. Shares of Apple (AAPL) are weighing down the Nasdaq after an analyst recommended investors take some profits in the stock. ECONOMIC EVENTS: In the U.S., factory orders rose 10.5% in July, which was a bit below the forecast for 11.0% growth. The Fed's Beige Book is scheduled to be released at 2:00 pm ET. In Europe, the final reading of Eurozone services PMI was knocked down to 53.1 from a preliminary 53.5 reading, mirroring the lowering of the Eurozone manufacturing PMI reading yesterday. COMPANY NEWS: Shares of Apple retreated 4% after research firm Pacific Crest advised investors to take some profits in the stock. Pacific Crest analyst Andy Hargreaves forecast the percentage of new iPhone users who buy the next version of the device beyond the iPhone 6 is likely to decline versus prior cycles. The stock likely has only limited room to increase, according to Hargreaves, who said he would probably downgrade Apple unless new products that can generate billions of dollars in new operating profit are launched at its September 9 event... Carmakers reported on August vehicle sales in the U.S., with Chrysler (FIATY) reporting a 20% increase, Ford stating that sales rose slightly compared to the prior year and General Motors (GM) posting a 1.2% decline in sales. MAJOR MOVERS: Among the notable gainers was Infinity Pharmaceuticals (INFI), which jumped 46% after the company announced a cancer drug collaboration with AbbVie (ABBV) and a master clinical supply agreement with Roche (RHHBY). Also higher was Mobileye (MBLY), which gained nearly 10% after Morgan Stanley wrote that the stock could rise "towards $100" if the company maintains its current market, gross margins and earnings position. Mobileye is scheduled to report on its second quarter results tomorrow morning, which will be its first quarterly report since its August IPO. Among the noteworthy losers was Repros Therapeutics (RPRX), which dropped 15% after newly posted FDA briefing documents regarding a panel on T-normalizing therapies prompted Piper Jaffray to downgrade the stock to Neutral from Overweight. Also lower following its earnings report was apparel company Vince Holding (VNCE), which fell 11%. INDEXES: Near midday, the Dow was up 33.71, or 0.2%, to 17,101.27, the Nasdaq was down 23.24, or 0.51%, to 4,574.95, and the S&P 500 was down 0.64, or 0.03%, to 2,001.64.

Stocks on Wall Street were mixed at midday, with the Nasdaq clinging to narrow gains and the Dow and S&P both down about 0.25%. Stocks began the session basically unchanged but turned mixed within minutes of the open. The volume has been light and the market has moved in a narrow range, continuing the type of pattern that was seen all of last week ahead of the holiday. ECONOMIC EVENTS: In the U.S., Markit's final manufacturing PMI for August dipped slightly from the flash print of 58.0 to 57.9, but that was up from July's 55.8 reading. ISM's manufacturing index for August climbed to 59.0 from 57.1 in July, beating expectations. Construction spending bounced back 1.8% in July, beating expectations for it to have risen 1.0% after declining in the prior month. In Asia, HSBC's final manufacturing PMI for China edged down to 50.2 from the preliminary 50.3 August reading, which was already down from the 51.7 report in July. The Chinese government's official purchasing managers index came in at 51.1 for August, which was down from its 51.7 reading in July. In Europe, the Eurozone's final manufacturing PMI for August was revised down to 50.7 from 51.8 in the preliminary reading. COMPANY NEWS: Apple (AAPL) was in the headlines following a celebrity photo hack involving several of its iCloud accounts. Despite the negative publicity from those events, the stock gained nearly 1% after noted Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster raised his price target on the tech giant's shares to $120 from $105, citing the upcoming launch of new products and services. Another firm, Cantor, said in its own note to investors that it believes that Apple will have its most exciting product launches "in many years" over the next few months... In M&A news, Dollar General (DG) rose almost 1% after increasing its all-cash proposal to buy Family Dollar (FDO) to $80.00 per share and also increasing the number of stores that it would be willing to agree to divest to 1,500 if ordered by the FTC. Shares of Family Dollar, which previously rejected Dollar General's prior proposal on the basis of antitrust regulatory concerns, traded above the new offer price, while Dollar Tree (DLTR), which currently has a merger agreement deal in place with Family Dollar, also gained 1.5%. MAJOR MOVERS: Among the notable gainers were two other companies involved in M&A, one which was a buyer and one which was bought. Norwegian Cruise Line (NCLH) advanced 12% after agreeing to acquire upscale peer Prestige Cruises for $3.03B, while Compuware (CPWR) rose over 12% after the company confirmed it agreed to be acquired by private equity investment firm Thoma Bravo in a transaction valued at approximately $2.5B. Among the noteworthy losers was Exelixis (EXEL), which plunged 53% after its phase 3 pivotal trial of cabozantinib in certain men with metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer did not meet its primary endpoint and the stock was downgraded by at least three Street research firms. Also lower was lease-to-own retailer CONN'S (CONN), which dropped 30% and was downgraded at Piper Jaffray after weakness in its credit operations prompted a Q2 earnings miss and caused the company to cut its fiscal year guidance. INDEXES: Near midday, the Dow was down 43.58, or 0.25%, to 17,054.87, the Nasdaq was up 2.97, or 0.06%, to 4,583.24, and the S&P 500 was down 4.83, or 0.24%, to 1,998.54.
11:03 EDTAAPLApple hits another fresh life high, levels to watch
Despite headlines concerning a high-level iCloud security breach targeting celebrity accounts, the stock is edging to a fresh life high this morning. Traders appear more focused on the upcoming product announcement on September 9th. At the current price of $103.65, there is no overhead resistance. A new upside objective for the bulls would potentially be at $105 or $107, both typical and currently active options strike prices. Support is at $102.50, the prior closing price.
