06:50 EDTGOOG, AAPLPiper sees two catalysts for Google shares in 2015
Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster says near-term investor concerns with regards to Google (GOOG) shares are overblown. Munster thinks investors are concerned that Google will lose its search deal with Apple’s (AAPL) Safari and that the search giant’s investments have pressured margins. He believes, however, that if Google were to lose Safari, the company will likely gain back that lost share within a year. Further, Munster believes Google's investments in robotics, self-driving cars, fiber, wireless and augmented reality will yield longer term revenue growth. The analyst views the resolution of the Safari deal and the possibility for cost-per-clicks turning positive for the first time since September 2011 as catalysts for the stock in 2015. Munster reiterates an Overweight rating on Google with a $630 price target. The stock closed Tuesday up $3.77 to $578.79.

14:28 EDTBBYBest Buy technical comments before results
The stock has had a strong advance over the prior year, but that has stalled somewhat heading into earnings in the last few months. The shares have been in a trading range largely bound by $35 at the low, and $40 at the high. Those two levels can help up project where price may go following results. A breakout above the $40 area, at the 52-week high, would be bullish. Based on the size of the trading range, we could expect a move to the $45 area would then be in the cards, or possibly better depending on the degree of positive surprise. If the news is bearish and price breaks down below $35, the following support levels could become downside objectives: $33.17, $31.30.

10:34 EDTINTC, MSFTHP slide after currency driven guidance cut called buying opportunity
The shares of Hewlett-Packard (HPQ) are falling after the company reported lower than expected first quarter revenue and sharply lowered its free cash flow guidance and cut its fiscal year profit view. However, analysts at Citigroup, Bernstein, and Brean Capital all recommended buying the stock on weakness in separate notes to investors today. BACKGROUND: HP reported slightly higher than expected Q1 profits, but its revenue came in below expectations. The company sharply lowered its fiscal 2015 free cash flow guidance to $3.5B-$4B from its previous outlook of $6.5B-$7B. The tech giant also lowered its fiscal 2015 EPS guidance to $3.53-$3.73 from its previous outlook of $3.83-$4.30. "While we were able to manage the impact of currency in the quarter and deliver earnings as expected, we believe the impact on FY15 will be significantly greater than we anticipated in November. We'll work hard to offset these impacts through re-pricing and productivity, but fully mitigating currency movements of this size would require reducing investments and mortgaging our future. We won't do that," said HP CEO Meg Whitman. ANALYST REACTION: The decline in HP's EPS guidance was entirely due to foreign currency fluctuations, while most of the cut in its free cash flow guidance was caused by one-time costs related to the upcoming split of HP into two separate companies, Citi analyst Jim Suva stated. Most of the company's businesses "continue to perform well or at least make progress," wrote Suva. The decline in the stock has created an attractive entry point for investors who are looking to own the shares in order to benefit from the break-up, according to the analyst. He kept a Buy rating on the shares. Bernstein analyst A.M. Sacconaghi was less upbeat on HP's outlook, but also recommended buying the shares on today's weakness. Although revenue estimates for HP may be too high, the stock's valuation remains attractive, as it is the second least expensive tech stock in the S&P 500, according to Sacconaghi, who believes the shares are worth $45-$50. Cautioning that HP's stock is likely "to be in the penalty box" in the near-term, Sacconaghi nonetheless believes that the shares could get a significant boost when the company provides more information about its spin-off. He recommended that investors buy the stock on today's weakness and kept an Outperform rating on the shares. HP's fundamentals haven't changed, as the company continues to expect its revenue to remain flat in fiscal 2015, and it has not changed its capital return guidance, Brean Capital analyst Ananda Baruah stated. The company also continues to expect free cash flow of at least $5B-$6B in 2016 and beyond, Baruah added. Moreover, HP's share repurchases are unlikely to be significantly reduced as a result of the decline in its free cash flow guidance, the analyst predicted. Baruah recommended buying the stock on today's weakness and kept a $45 price target and Buy rating on the shares. PRICE ACTION: In early trading, HP fell 9.5% to $34.84. OTHERS TO WATCH: Other large cap PC levered names are also weak in morning trading after HP's report last night, with Microsoft (MSFT) down 0.25% and Intel (INTC) down 1.2%.

13:20 EDTWMTAnalysts divided on Wal-Mart after results, pay raise announcement
Barclays cut its rating on Wal-Mart (WMT) this morning after the world's largest retailer reported its quarterly results and gave forward looking guidance yesterday. However, research firm Janney Capital wrote in a note to investors that it believes shares of Wal-Mart will probably outperform going forward, as other retailers are likely to implement wage hikes similar to the one that the giant discounter announced. BACKGROUND: Yesterday Wal-Mart announced that it would raise the wages of all of its employees to at least $10 per hour by February 2016. The company also reported higher than expected fourth quarter profits, excluding certain items, but its Q4 revenue came in below expectations. Moreover, the retailer provided lower than expected profit guidance for its fiscal 2016 and lowered its fiscal 2016 sales growth guidance to 1%-2% from its previous outlook of 2%-4%. Wal-Mart's stock fell significantly yesterday after the quarterly report. ANALYST REACTION: Barclays lowered its rating on Wal-Mart to Equal Weight from Overweight and dropped its price target for shares to $85 from $90. The firm says the retailer's investments to improve the shopping experience at its U.S. stores will continue into FY17 and are unlikely to produce near-term benefits. It believes Wal-Mart's Q4 domestic comps were aided by lower gas prices and easy weather comparisons, and notes that weather is unlikely to help in FY16. Meanwhile, Janney Capital analyst David Strasser said Wal-Mart's stock dropped because of worries about the company's spending and the hit the company took from negative foreign exchange trends. However, other retailers are likely to implement similar wage hikes, causing the entire sector to come under pressure and enabling Wal-Mart's stock to outperform going forward, according to Strasser. Additionally, Wal-Mart is likely to continue to benefit from higher gas prices in Q1, wrote the analyst, who kept an $89 price target and Buy rating on the shares. PRICE ACTION: In mid-afternoon trading, Wal-Mart added 0.5% to $83.94.

White thinks the reports of an electric car show innovation at the tech giant continues. He keeps a Buy rating Apple shares with a $160 price target. The stock is up 30c it morning trading to $128.71.

06:20 EDTAAPLApple price target raised to $145 on increasingly bullish outlook at Goldman
Goldman raised Buy rated Apple's price target to $145 from $130 based on increased confidence in platform momentum, sustained iPhone growth, and the potential for the Apple Watch. 08:41 EDTWMTWal-Mart says hourly associates to earn at least $10 per hour by Feb. 2016
Doug McMillon, Wal-Mart Stores CEO, announced a new initiative on pay and training for U.S. associates. Approximately 500,000 full-time and part-time associates at Walmart U.S. stores and Sam's Clubs will receive pay raises in the first half of the current fiscal year. Current and future associates will benefit from this initiative, which ensures that Walmart hourly associates earn at least $1.75 above today's federal minimum wage, or $9.00 per hour, in April. The following year, by Feb. 1, 2016, current associates will earn at least $10.00 per hour. As part of today's announcement, Walmart and the Walmart Foundation also committed $100M over five years to help increase the economic mobility for entry level workers by advancing their careers. This initiative will benefit the retail and service industries. The Walmart Foundation will work with other foundations, employers, community colleges and non-profit organizations to address a fundamental challenge in America -- how to better train and advance workers in the retail and adjacent sectors. Today, more than 15 million people, including 7 million women, work in retail.

Apple (AAPL) is attempting to launch Apple Pay in China, but a People's Bank of China official stated the company has not acknowledged regulators and "it's unclear whether the product meets the government’s requirements,” while talks with state-owned card payment operator UnionPay "have stalled" according to sources close to the companies, reports MarketWatch. Alibaba (BABA) currently operates the similar Alipay service and an Alibaba employee stated the two companies "have stayed in contact and are preparing for several projects," but because all payments go through UnionPay, Apple's entry into the market is ultimately controlled by the state-owned firm.
