11:16 EDTCSIQCanadian Solar at a key technical juncture, levels to watch
Share price has continued to fall since earnings, with price last at $26.34. In a note from a few sessions ago we mentioned that there was a large potential head and shoulders pattern with a neckline at the $26 area. The behavior of the shares now may be either to trigger that pattern by continuing to fall below $26, or, to bounce thereby thwarting the pattern. A move below $26 would have the pattern become active, with downside potential over time to the $14 area. A bounce from these levels that sustains above $26 would void the pattern through time decay, price, or a combination of both.

08:43 EDTCSIQCanadian Solar should be bought on sell-off, says Canaccord
Canaccord reiterated its Buy rating on Canadian Solar following the sell-off after what it believes were solid Q3 results from the company. The firm feels the entire solar group is detached from fundamentals on concerns of cheap energy, but also believes investors were disappointed when the company did not provide details of a YieldCo set-up. Canaccord sees a growing pipeline and continued significant volume for Canadian Solar, but lowers its price target to $46 from $48.

10:26 EDTCSIQSolar names retreat after First Solar results miss expectations
Shares of a number of solar companies are falling after one of the leading companies in the sector, First Solar (FSLR), announced weaker than expected results. WHAT'S NEW: First Solar reported Q3 earnings per share, excluding a one-time tax benefit, of 61c, compared with analysts' consensus estimate of 64c. The company reported Q3 revenue of $899M, versus the consensus outlook of about $1B. First Solar reiterated its fiscal 2014 EPS guidance of $2.40-$2.80, versus the consensus outlook of $2.61. However, the company trimmed its full-year sales guidance to $3.6B-$3.9B from $3.7B-$4B. The company added that it was on track to meet or exceed its bookings goal for the full year. Additionally, First Solar announced that its potential bookings opportunities had risen to 13.7 gigawatts, versus 12.7 gigawatts in Q2, due to continued growth in the U.S., Latin America and India. “Following the project delays experienced in the prior quarter, our third quarter earnings have improved, and we continue to make progress towards our financial targets for the year," said First Solar CEO Jim Hughes. First Solar is not prepared to pursue the launch of a YieldCo at this time, Hughes reported. YieldCos are subsidiaries of energy companies that own power plants and projects and typically trade on stock exchanges. WHAT'S NOTABLE: On October 20, JPMorgan wrote that the recent sell-off in solar stocks was unjustified, as Q3 results up to that time showed that the sector's fundamentals had changed little. The firm named First Solar as one of its favorite names in the sector. PRICE ACTION: In early trading, First Solar (FSLR) sank 11% to $50.15. Meanwhile, SunPower (SPWR) fell 2.5% to $29.57, Sunedison (SUNE) declined 1.6% to $18, Canadian Solar (CSIQ) lost 3% to $30, and JinkoSolar (JKS) gave back 2.7% to $22.74.
