| theflyonthewall.com: | Motorola could rise 40% if it can spin off the cellphone biz, Barron's reports | | Even though Motorola (MOT) faces challenges in its major businesses, notably cellphones, its shares look increasingly attractive on a sum-of-the-parts basis. Motorola plans to spin off its cellphone unit, and reportedly has weighed a sale of its home and networks division. The company could be worth $9 a share, based on a sum of it's parts-- appreciably above its recent share price of $6.50. Analysts say, Motorola seems primed for a breakup because it has co-CEOs, with Sanjay Jha, formerly of Qualcomm (QCOM), heading the "mobile-devices" segment and Greg Brown overseeing the rest of the company. SUM OF PARTS: (1) Motorola has $4.6B, or $2 a share, of net cash and investments. (2) The overlooked and valuable division called Enterprise Mobility, which sells radio, data-communications and other equipment to police and fire departments and other government operations. The unit generated $1.1B of operating profits in FY09 and could be worth $10B, or more than $4 a share, given it's entrenched customer base. Macquarie analyst Phil Cusick has called this Motorola's "jewel," given its good growth prospects and high operating profit margins of 15%. (3) The mature home-and-networks division had operating profits of $558M last year and could be worth $4B, or almost $2 a share. All this totals about $8 a share without the mobile-phone division, which is reviving under Jha's leadership. Jha expects the division to move into the black by Q4, aided by an emphasis on higher-margin smartphones like the Droid and the Cliq, which can sell for more than $400. Morgan Keegan analyst Tavis McCourt says, "If successful, this division could easily be worth $1 to $2 a share in a spin-out, even if it gets back to only minimal profitability, and as much as $5 a share if it can achieve global success." Barclays Capital analyst Jeff Kvaal Friday upgraded Motorola to Overweight from Equal Weight, citing the stock's pullback and his optimism about its cellphone and public-safety divisions. Bottom-line: Motorola's cash and asset value offer a nice margin of safety. With some favorable developments, like a successful breakup, Barron's says the stock could be up 40% in the next year. | theflyonthewall.com: | Earnings Preview: Motorola's Q4 report will be focused on Droid results | | Motorola (MOT) is expected to report Q4 earnings before the market opens on Thursday, January 28, with a conference call scheduled for 8:00 am ET. The consensus estimate is 8c for EPS and $5.94B for revenue, according to First Call. On Motorola's last earnings call, management provided Q4 EPS guidance of 7c-9c from continue operations, above the then consensus of 6c. This will be the company's first quarter in which it sold phones based on Google's (GOOG) Android software. The phones -- the Cliq on T-Mobile USA (T, DT) and the Droid on Verizon Wireless (VZ, VOD) -- are the fruits of a shake-up of the phone business engineered by co-CEO Sanjay Jha, who joined the company a year and a half ago. Specifically, Verizon's CFO John Killian on it's earnings call said, that “the Droid has been extremely well received. Some think the Droid might be the most successful phone launch for Motorola since the Razr. Motorola has put on hold plans to spin off the cell phone unit, but The Wall Street Journal recently reported that the company has been looking to sell its largest division, Home and Networks Mobility, which makes TV set-top boxes, cable modems and related gear. However, the bids have been lower than what Motorola has been looking for, according to the paper. Tim Long at BMO Capital Markets expects Motorola to have sold about 1.3M Android phones at an average price of $425 each, 4.5M iDEN units at an ASP of $170.3, and 8.5M legacy handsets at an ASP of $101.4. He still finds the company has a lot to prove in Android, and wants to see if it maintains its momentum this year. BMO' is modeling Q4 EPS of 9c on $16.6M in revenue, and for FY10 37c on $24.43B in revenue, above FY10 consensus of 34c and $24.0B. Key Issues for the conference call: an update on Motorola's past comments that it plans to launch more than 20 new smart phones in 2010, most of them running Android. Investors will look for more information on Motorola’s ODM strategy. There will be questions about the upcoming spinoff and the potential sale of its Home business, but BMO expects no new information at this time. :theflyonthewall.com |
