theflyonthewall.com: Mercer President/ Chair: improved pulp prices, markets led to strong Q4 results
Jimmy S.H. Lee, President and Chairman, stated: "In the fourth quarter, pulp markets continued to strengthen. Continued strong demand from China and historically low global inventories for bleached softwood kraft pulp, which were reported to be approximately 23 days, helped support upward pricing momentum. During the fourth quarter, European list prices increased by $70 per ADMT to $800 per ADMT at year end. Such price increases were partially offset by the continuing weakness of the U.S. dollar versus the Euro and Canadian dollar in the period. Subsequently, in January and February of 2010, producers implemented further price increases totaling $50 per ADMT bringing the European list price to $850." :theflyonthewall.com

theflyonthewall.com: Resolute applies to cease trade Mercer's offer to acquire Fibrek
AbitibiBowater Inc., doing business as Resolute Forest Products (ABH), announced that it applied to the Bureau de d cision et de r vision , the administrative tribunal with statutory jurisdiction in securities law and regulatory matters in Quebec, for an order to cease trade the proposed offer by Mercer International (MERC) to acquire all of the issued and outstanding common shares of Fibrek Inc. Fibrek and Mercer announced the offer on Feb. 10. In its application, Resolute requested that the Bureau exercise its public interest jurisdiction to cease trade the offer on the basis, among other things, that it includes an improperly discounted and dilutive private placement of warrants and an unreasonable break fee. Resolute requested that the Bureau hear its application on an expedited basis, and will argue that these measures are unlawful and inappropriate defensive measures to Resolute's offer. On Feb. 9, the Bureau rendered an order to cease trade Fibrek's tactical poison pill effective as of 3:00 p.m. today. :theflyonthewall.com
