Stocks began the session in negative territory and have not been able to gain any upside momentum throughout the morning. The economic reports that were released during the pre-market session had little effect on the market as the personal income and spending reports were in line with expectations. During the first 30 minutes of the trading session, however, the market received a blow when the Chicago Purchasing Manager report was not only below expectations at 49.7, but reached its lowest level in three years. On a positive note, the University of Michigan Consumer Confidence reading moved to a four month high. The market has been sitting near its lows throughout the morning…ECONOMIC EVENTS: U.S. personal income inched up 0.1% in August while spending rose 0.5%, both a little light of forecasts. Also, July's 0.3% income gain was revised down to 0.1%. The 0.4% increase in July spending was not revised. Wages and salaries were up 0.1% last month, as was disposable income. The savings rate fell to 3.7% in August from 4.1% in July (revised from 4.2%). The PCE chain price index jumped to 0.4% versus a flat reading previously (revised from unchanged). The core rate was steady at 0.1% (July revised up from unchanged). The September Chicago PMI Business Barometer Index came in at 49.7 vs. consensus of 53.0. U.S. Chicago ISM dropped 3.3 points to 49.7 in September after dipping 0.7 points to 53.0 in August. The index hasn't been below 50 since September 2009. Most of the components declined. The employment component fell to 52.0 from 57.1. New orders dropped to 47.4 from 54.8. Production slipped to 55.4 from 57.4. Prices paid jumped, however, to 63.2 from 57.0. The September Consumer Sentiment Index registered at 78.3 vs. consensus of 79.0. In Europe, Spain and Italy continued to bridle against further fiscal restrictions where accepting aid might work against their sovereignty. There was also lingering talk that Moody's could downgrade Spain... COMPANY NEWS: Medtronic (MDT) and China Kanghui Holdings (KH) announced a merger agreement whereby Medtronic will acquire Kanghui for approximately $816M in cash, or $30.75 per ADS. Kanghui rallied over 20% on the news. Research in Motion (RIMM) beat Q2 expectations, sending its shares higher by 9%...MAJOR MOVERS: Among the notable gainers were AZZ Inc. (AZZ), up 14% after beating Q2 estimates and raising guidance for FY13, and Cytori Therapeutics (CYTX), up 17% after winning a $106M BARDA contract. Among the noteworthy losers were Adtran (ADTN), down 8% after lowering Q3 guidance, and Wesco Aircraft (WAIR), down 4% after announcing a 1.8M secondary offering...INDICES: Near noon, the Dow was down 67.73, or 0.50%, to 13,418.24; the Nasdaq was lower by 19.09, or 0.61%, to 3,117.51; and the S&P 500 fell 7.47, or 0.52%, to 1,439.68. | |
