The futures were higher in early trading on the heels of several positive earnings reports. The market opened to the upside and hit its highs for the day a short time later. There was little on the economic calendar so the market spent most of the day drifting. The bias was to the downside and the selling pressure eventually pushed the market lower. The market spent most of the afternoon trying to move back to positive territory which it did about an hour before the close…The Dow fell 30.72 to 10,467.16, the S&P lost 4.60 to 1,101.53, and the Nasdaq eased 12.87 to 2,251.69…Among the biggest gainers: Citrix Systems (CTXS) surged 19.7% to $56.67 after Robert Baird & Co. raised their rating on the shares to Outperform from Neutral. Newport (NEWP) soared 17.7% to $12.75 after forecasting full-year EPS of 80c-90c, beating the average estimate of 65c. The losers included: Covance (CVD) which dropped 20% to $39.65 after cutting its full-year EPS forecast to $2.10-$2.30, falling shy of the average estimate of $2.42. VistaPrint (VPRT) slumped 36.4% to $31.99 after forecasting Q1 EPS of 32c, missing the consensus estimate of 46c. CURRENCY: The dollar closed 0.48% lower on the yen at 86.94 and 0.58% lower on the euro at 0.7649…COMMODITIES: Crude oil closed up 1.37 at 78.36...Natural gas added 0.10 to 4.83...Gold was higher by 8.10 at 1,168.50…ECONOMIC DATA: The new jobless claims level was 457,000 vs. consensus of 460,000...The weekly EIA natural gas report showed a 28 Bcf increase. Tomorrow…GDP, Employment Cost Index, Chicago PMI, and Consumer Sentiment are due.
